Like a lot of western anime fiends who have been around since before the internet, I got my start watching the original Astro Boy series in the mornings before school and later graduated to Voltron (GoLion) and when I discovered Robotech, I was hooked. Anime showed me that a cartoon series could have an over-arching plot, it could have character development, it could have mature themes, and it didn't have to treat its audience like idiots.
I wouldn't class myself as a rabid otaku, but i'm probably leaning in that direction. My anime tastes are extremely varied to the point that my list looks like it was compiled by a schizophrenic. The short version is that if there is a story that I find interesting, I will watch it. If the story is mediocre, but it's entertaining and the artwork is good, I'll watch that too.
I watch a lot of AMVs. That is how I found a lot of the titles that I have currently watched. The reason being that if a show made enough of an impression for someone to spend days of editing to make a decent AMV, it's probably worth my attention.
I also host a monthly anime showcase at the office where I work where friends and coworkers will come for pizza, beer, and a few hours of anime.
