Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

If Pani Poni Dash was super wacky and odd and laugh your ass out aloud funny, then I have one word for Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei- siiiiiiick. It's directed by the same person and the humor and the interesting art style and the humor (I'm really not sure if there's a message or not) will blow you away. Although straight laced people would probably hate this.

Let's just say if you're looking breasts and butts and girls kicking ass with more blood and mature themes but not Hentai, try Tenjou Tenge the manga version. The TV version takes out all the nudity.

Lucky☆Star
add

Lucky Star's comedy is mostly being carried by Hirano Aya, and the rest of the gang play off her character. For Azumanga Daioh, everyone on the team works together with the others, so they function like a group, each is funny in her own way and they play off among on another. Lucky Star is basically talking about high school nothing, ala the Seinfeld Style. For Azumanga Daioh, there are very small arcs for the purpose of driving forward humor. Both 4koma-turned-anime shows about school with Azumanga Daioh being a little more slapstick and less Otaku humor driven.

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Let's just say Darker Than Black is much grittier and darker, and there are nothing assumed. It's also more intelligent and you can't find any over used cliche at all. If Witch Hunter Robin was an excellent show for you, then Darker than Black will be a superior show for you.

Reideen
add

Reideen 2007 by Production I.G. (who did Ghost in the Shell TV series, it's predecessor Reideen series were the prototype for Rahxephon. The new Reideen has a character similar to Mishima Reika, but Reideen's character does a lot more and is a lot more involved in the main character's life. Reideen does lack the brain trip/psychological exploration factor, and it's more like a beautifully done CG update of the classic giant robot series. It at least, isn't concept heavy like Eva, Rahxephon, or Gasaraki.

Gasaraki
add

Technically the "religion" expressed in both shows are vastly different, and the technology and history isn't similar either, but as for a better exploration/combination of religious allegory, more realistic technology, somewhat better developed characters and a show that the budget didn't get blow away so the animation degrades near the end, and add a little brain tripping and great mecha combat, and you have Gasaraki (produced by Sunrise, which means Bandai)

Ergo Proxy
add

Ergo Proxy is a high budget show that develops way too slowly, but it's heavy on philosophical concepts of existence - similar to Lain's discussion of it. Ergo Proxy has some action but the background story and concept exploration take too long - it's 22 eps.

Boogiepop wa Warawanai

Both mess with your brain. However, Boogiepop creeps you out with supernatural, where Lain (which does have bits of creepiness) uses the modern phenomenon of internet and the decrease in human contact. Boogiepop is perhaps less philosophical than Lain and less conceptual

Girls with guns. But Gunsmith Cats has a girl with grenades and a tighter story. The manga is even better developed.

Gun fights and women that kicks ass. But not as funny and the character development is less interesting. The action is just as good.
