I don't usually write reviews but I just felt like I needed to share what I felt after watching this season. I put off watching these last few seasons for as long as I could because I didn't know what to expect. I exclusively watched the anime without even looking into the manga (I tried a few times but I ultimately didn't have the time for both and opted for the anime instead).
SPOILERS, obviously.
The world was simpler when titans were titans and humanity was extinct outside of those walls.
Where do I even begin with this season? It was a complete and total
...
mindfuck and I still don't know how to process it fully. Eren, as a character, wasn't my initial favorite. He was your typical "I'm gonna avenge my mother and save the world but I'm not actually very talented or skilled but I'm the main character and I have angst" protagonist. He was a fairly straightforward character in the first three seasons, at least he was in my opinion. But ever since we found out about Marley and the truth behind the titans, Eren evolved into this cunning psychopath who will not stop until Eldia is free from danger and discrimination from the rest of the world. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually kind of supportive of that plan fully aware that the cycle of bloodshed won't stop unless one of two sides is permanently erased, just not to the point of massacring the entire world.
It's revealed that Eren influenced Grisha's choice to kill the Reiss children just so the events that follow actually happen, in favor of Eren's plans. I can't help but wonder just how much of Grisha's actions were influenced by future Eren like treating young Zeke poorly so he would denounce their father so he would be sent to the island to meet Carla and have Eren, for example. It feels as though the entire AOT universe may have been predetermined by Eren himself since he has access to the future and communication with the past Attack Titan/s.
The scout regiment, or what's left of it, intends to stop Eren without any real concrete plan apart from the usual talk or kill. Hange admits that Eren has borrowed from her ideology but continues to want to stop Eren because "it's not right" which isn't only out of character but is just lazy writing. The citizens of Paradis Island owes neither Marley nor the world anything, let alone the mercy they weren't afforded. I agree its not right to murder millions of innocent people in cold blood, but that's not the argument I want to hear from Hange, at the very least, not the only one.
I appreciate Gabi's character development and even Armin finally telling Mikasa to start thinking for herself instead of pining over Eren who hasn't showed any interest in her apart from familial care. Floch lasted way too long, to be perfectly honest. I kept thinking why no one has even tried killing him yet because it seemed a lot of the Yeagerists wouldn't have gone as far as they did if it weren't for him acting as ring leader. Magath and Shadis's final sacrifice weren't anything as spectacular as Ymir or Erwin's but it just got me thinking about the real fallen heroes of wars that have actually happened and how there are some like Magath and Shadis who died and no one would even remember their names apart from each other.
Overall, this season didn't disappoint me. I am not unaware of how the manga ends and how it has enraged certain fans of the series. I don't know if that is what the author intended from the very beginning or has gotten lazy and wanted it over and done with as this occurrence is not unheard of. Regardless of how it all ends, Attack on Titan has become one of the defining shows of the century and I'm grateful to have been witness to it.
Also this is more of a me problem, but I feel like none of the music isn't as good either. It feels very lackluster. Just me? Ok.
