This review contains spoilers for the light novel.
There is one reason, in my opinion, that people like this show. It is the same reason people watch TLC on a Sunday, its enjoyable garbage. This show is peak consumerism, putting money over the actual quality of the show.
The characters are boring and not that memorable. I feel like they over did it with the amount of characters, there seems to be too much a focus on all of them and it distracts from the main story. Though I might as well go over some of them. Tatsuya, the main hero dude and is overpowered
...
in every aspect. He does what scientists do in years, in hours. He shoots a payload the size of Hiroshima at the drop of a hat. He can see through walls and completely destroy a terrorist cell in the matter of minutes. However, he can't pass a practical skill exam because he cant use "practical" magic. This, in turn, puts him in the low tier class and causes him to be discriminated against. To be completely honest, no matter how absurd that fact is, it is part of the appeal and the enjoyability of the show. People, including myself, like watching a low tier god amaze other students who have discriminated against him previously. Either way, Tatsuya is pretty boring as a character, dude is like a clone from the clone wars. Tatsuya, this master engineer, can pretty much fix anything except his boring personality. Oh well.
Miyuki is Tatsuya's sister and incestuous lover. She is overpowered too and plays some sort of role in the plot. You can often find her standing up for her brother and walks with him. I know very interesting, but for some reason, it causes a big commotion. Also don't worry, the incest gets retconned so they are still sister brother but like she is a genetically modified human and he's mentally her cousin... who knows, but they do this so the fans can stomach them getting married.
Erika and Leo are both okay characters in my books, and their dynamic makes them enjoyable to watch. That's pretty much all worth mentioning character wise. The story is quite bland but its quite okay for the likes of trash TV. The villains are pretty much copy pasted from the front page of the New York Times, terrorists or China, whoever they might be, they are pretty much your average villain. The sound and art are alright, they are pretty much average, nothing special. However, the ED and OP are both good songs.
In conclusion, if you want to watch trash TV, don't watch this show. Why? Because there is a show that does it better. It came out a year before Irregulars at Magic High School, and does everything from the magic to the incest to the characters better. Its called Tokyo Ravens. If you don't want to watch trash TV, still watch Tokyo Ravens or watch something better than this junk, I trust that you can come up with something.
