Otoyomegatari is a really famous manga set in 18th century Central Asia. We see many cultures—— their marriage traditions, lifestyles, etc. We see their world often via eyes of an English traveller, Mr.Smith. He writes down whatever he sees, finds interesting. This manga has amazing art and is written by Mori Kaoru. Fushigi no kuni/ Isabella Bird’s Unbeaten tracks in Japan is a manga written by Sassa Taiga, published in the same magazine— Harta. This story is based on the real life traveller Isabella Bird’s book—Unbeaten tracks in Japan. She travelled across Japan in the 19th century and noted down the way the people lived, extravagant city life in Ezo/Edo and poverty in war ravaged Aizu. She travelled extensively, wrote extensively. The manga shows us the customs, food, and lifestyle of rural Japan in those times. It gives off similar feel like Otoyomegatari, feels like you are travelling through time. If you love historical fiction like me, you’ll love this manga. And thanks to V2-moon for making such an excellent recommendation.

Chichi to Hige-Gorilla to Watashi
|
Dad, Beard gorilla and I is a beautiful slice of life manga. It has short episodic chapters, light read, funny, and has little bits of romance. The child....Michiru is a young girl who lost her mother a while ago. The mother’s (Miyuki) passing away is brought up many times, in a very sensitive manner. The sad bits are a part of life too. But thanks to his cute daughter and younger brother( named as Beard Gorilla by Michiru) the dad manages to move on. Every day is a happy day of parenting, working in office, cooking, visiting the zoo, etc. Very enjoyable read. It made me read 4koma style manga.....something I hate. But the love for this manga made me read it anyways. Youtsuba is also about a single dad bringing up his only daughter. Her name is Yotsuba and she gets into all sorts of mischief every day. When they hang out with Jumbo(dad’s friend) it gives a similar vibe to Beard gorilla. A warm, slice of life manga. Also kinda episodic. If you loved one of these manga, I’m sure you’ll love the other.

Ouroboros: Keisatsu wo Sabaku wa Ware ni Ari
|
Naoki Urasawa created a mystery of epic proportions and even after reading through 100+ chapters the readers were still interested. Still curious about what will happen next. Ouroboros is something similar. A murder happened 15years ago, and still it is of great significance to a number of people. Nobody can be trusted. Why did the murder occur? Who was the killer? The best part is that in both these manga there were no easy guesses, AND no deus ex machina (stupid plots twist ending).

Jiraishin is about a mysterious, genius detective and the crimes he solves. It has murders, corrupt politicians and policemen, and also other mature themes. Ouroboros is similar to that. The MC is a policeman and solves cases similar to Jiraishin. It is also a mature seinen manga, and has several murder/crime mysteries. The overall feel is similar.

Both these manga are historical fiction. Their stories are interesting and still realistic. In Golden Kamuy, Sugimoto and Asirpa are searching for gold. There are lots of fights, cooking, surviving in post Meiji restoration period. It is a fun read. In Issak, we see a Japanese sniper guy in the 17th century in Europe. He plays a big role in the 30year war of the Holy Roman Empire. The plot is wild, but executed really really well. Both manga give great action sequences and strategies/war tactics. And they are fun with good art.

Both these manga are historical fiction with a similar plot. In Nobunaga no Chef, a modern day chef called Ken gets sent back in time and becomes a chef for Oda Nobunaga. In Nobunaga Concerto, a modern day schoolboy called Saburo goes back in time. He actually resembles Nobunaga. This makes things very interesting. Both manga are historically pretty accurate and very interesting to read. Good quality seinen! Action, drama, philosophy, history and a little bit of romance. On their own they are great, but reading them one after another makes things even more fun.

Ikemen Sengoku is story of a designer girl called Mai who gets transported back in time to Nobunaga at Honnoji incident. This is a parallel universe, so characters are different, behave differently from history. It is a fun and light read. But, it is a shoujo based on an Ikemen game! Nobunaga Concerto is a seinen, Saburo becomes Nobunaga! It is historically more accurate, and detailed. And personally much more amazing! Both are fun to read.

Takemitsu Zamurai is a beautiful story about a talented samurai. He is a friendly and strong person. The manga is light at time, has good action sequences and also doesn’t hesitate to show death. Also it has a unique art style. Artist- Matsumoto Taiyou. Ichigeki(one strike, one kill) is a manga where peasants are recruited to form a kill squad. These are strong guys, but not educated or cunning. Ushigoro is the MC, he is strong and smart. The art is similar to Takemitsu but more normal. The feel of a so called “samurai” manga is vey similar in both manga. They have mystical portions of talking cats and dogs. Ichigeki is pretty dark. Like the Hateful eight movie by Tarantino. Artist- Matsumoto Jiro.

Many friendships start by playing a sport or video game together. In Ping Pong, we see a world that feels like a morning spent running. A lazy hot afternoon spent indoors, playing ping pong. Tap tap, sounds echoing. Drinking cold water, and getting right back to it. Ping pong is just a backdrop. The story is about the friendship. Smile, Peko, China, Dragon, Akuma—— all connected by a game. Hi score girl is more relatable for me. I love playing video games. Not seen too much arcade games. I don’t brag, but inside I feel confident that I’m a good player. So if I find someone playing better than me, I feel anger, rejection, and if they are really good —Admiration. So I can relate to Haruo. He is a gaming nerd. Ono-san, (ojou-sama) is a girl who excels at everything. When he sees her, he feels jealous and angry. But also happy, to find a rival. And I dare say, a friend. They have fun together. The kids in both these are so much like real kids/teenagers. They might as well have existed in the same extended manga universe. And I love both these stories, that’s another similarity.

Dr.Goto Kensuke is a highly skilled doctor from Tokyo. But for some mysterious reason he gives up his job and goes to a small island called Koshiki. The island has a small population, we keep seeing the familiar faces throughout the chapters. Every chapter a new small incident happens, it is a slice of life. There is a lot of medical action ie. the doctor saving lives quite regularly. Most importantly I loved the friendly and light feel of the manga. Over the months, the village accepted the doctor as their own, and now I like the characters too. Some are loyal, some are annoying, some are stupid, some are hardworking and most importantly they are all a part of Koshiki island family. Barakamon is a beautiful slice of life manga. The main guy Handa Sei, is a bright talented calligrapher from Tokyo. A city kid. And he now comes to a small island, or rather he is exiled there because he had insulted a senior person. He get used to the village life, and soon falls in love with the place. Every chapter shows his new adventures with the village folk, kids, painting, etc. It is a fun and light read. Both these manga give off a similar light, slice of life vibe. City person going to small island is not the only similarity here.

Can humans coexist with robots? If they did then what would the society look like? Since robots are made to serve humans they are inferior to us-----merely our servants. But if the robots develop high A.I.!!! If robots develop feelings, then is it morally right to treat them as interiors?? Both these manga explore such themes. Boichi's story is more of a classic "Avenge my father"story. And Urasawa is same as always!! Creates a world ending mystery. A thriller. Both stories are worth reading.

Slam Dunk and Rookies have many things in common. They are both sports manga which show teamspirit is important and have the motto 'One for All'. The protagonists don't start of as smart sportsmen but develop into them. eg. Sakuragi shows phenomenal development in SD while the whole Nikogaku team goes from being delinquents to spirited baseball players. Even if you don't know anything about sports you will be able to enjoy these series. Both manga maintain a balance between the wonderfully presented games and the emotional aspect, ie. the players' dreams.
