Can't help comparing this anime to Slamdunk, with less wacky antics, less or even 0 romance angles and drama. I loved how good and funny SD was, but Haikyuu is an improved version on a different sport. This show focused more on team game aspect, developing their techniques, competitive spirit, team and individual goals. I've been reading the manga, so for me season 1 is a simple yet cool set up for the next season/s. I guarantee it'll be more interesting and intense.
If Slamdunk have sakuragi and rukawa, haikyuu got the dynamic duo of hinata and kageyama. Two rookies with
...
opposite personalities, Hinata -this naruto look alike isn't a complete idiot about volleyball, but needs more improvement in terms of skills. Its mainly due to circumstances, he never experienced being part of a descent team and play competitive games during his junior days. He lacks the height for spiker position but blessed with natural jumping ability. While Kageyama, was known as the "king" because of his pin-point setting accuracy, However his junior team struggled because he wasn't a team player (a douche). He worked out his attitude problem along with his new team. Thanks to Hinata, someone who can follow his sets with eyes closed lol! What i also like here is how they share the spotlight with the other characters, including coaches and even the reserves. I can't wait for tsukishima (the blocker) shines for the next season and for the graduating players to taste the sweet victory. Karasuno HS volleyball team "The Blackhawks" will fight their way back to its old glorious days during the little giant era, whose identity is still a mystery.
Volleyball has tendency to display repetitive sequences for non-player viewers. Haikyuu's animation avoided that and highlighted scenes that makes a volleyball match exciting like the rallies, dives, spikes, players quickly movin and jumping around the court etc.. captured by good camera angles or movements and with the sound effects during spikes, ball bounces or hitting the net or floor, ref. whistles and shoe squeaking all of making the scenes more realistic.
Characterizations are consistent when you watch each one of them on and off the court, its easy to distinguish their personalities which may change as they grow in the story. I also enjoy how funny the guys are, its your typical varsity players goofing around even when the game is serious. My review covers mostly on season 1 only. Season 2 is on going and i heard its grinding right now as expected. BTW i don't think this anime is goin' KNB way. ^^

Its one of my personal favorites. I only watched action/adventure/psychological anime before until Toradora introduced me to the rom-com/slice of life genre. The first few episodes caught my attention because it was hilarious. The scenario when a small girl suddenly invaded your house attempting to kill you just because you found her missing love letter is pure exaggeration, after talking things over both of you agreed to help each other out dealing with your highs school crush problems, well that was interesting! Its the start of misadventures, funny moments and relationship development of takasu, taiga and friends . If the 1st half is
...
more about the joy of youth, it became a bit more serious on the 2nd half and i started appreciating the story and the romantic side of this anime.
Takasu's delinquent image i think is just a front to make his character more interesting, he's actually a gentle person and responsible. Taiga is a typical tsundere with family issues, your annoying but cute type of friend while her best friend Minori is a sporty, weird, hard working and in my opinion the best girl of TD. Kitamura is their class rep, vice pres of student council, basically he's a type of friend who leads the gang with some weirdness like minori. Lastly we have Ami, she's pretty and cool but the only issue was her identity whether to act as a celebrity/model or simply be herself . Taiga made her realized that she doesn't need to act perfect all the time to be loved by people. We have this combination of personalities here that you may also relate with your our own circle of friends.
Now i might go subjective here, what made this show special for me is it really touches the heart strings. They got some scenes where some simple conversations and character narrations about life accompanied by acoustic background music just made the moments so heart-felt, its making me catch my breath, basically they've got good soundtracks and used it so well. I recall an episode where minori and takasu are applying some metaphors of ghost/UFO to their conversation, and that was perfectly played by the writer. I just witnessed the most intimate conversation about ghost, plus the subtle scenes like the Popsicle melting and minori's smile at the end, who'd have thought that they were talking about love. I was like, that's some mutual understanding goin' on there. Speaking of minorin, i wish they had a better ending for her. I understand why its takasuXtaiga but its hard to see character like that get nothing. I guess that's why the soundtrack says love is something pure, sweet and Bitter.
After completing TD, i started watching other rom-coms/slice of life like golden time, sakurasou, ao haru ride, ano hana, tonari no kaibutsu etc. They're all good but this show for me is the best because the peak of its comedy and romance is just SO Right. That's why its called ROM-COM it WON'T give you a tragic end / heavy drama, over complicated scenarios and a lot of serious romance all episodes. Well, for the slice of life part, other shows are better.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku (snafu).. well, that's a long title, just like the character conversations from this anime. Yeah, a lot of blah blah blah.. scenes where the characters are just sitting, doin nothing and just another high school rom-com / cliche'.. that's why they say this is one boring show. For me, i described it as "ONE OF A KIND" I just happened to appreciate the unique approach on this anime. If Baby steps attacked the sports genre with a realistic approach, no supernatural powers, just tennis and a bit of romance, SNAFU gave me some human-ecosystem
...
on social aspect and philosophical theme. really?? like some highly acclaimed anime like evangelion, monster, psycho pass, death note, etc.. that we dig in because of their depth. What's impressive here is they applied it on such a fragile genre which is High School rom-com. Its a Hit or a Miss move for the producer of this show.
They perfectly used the main characters, Hikigaya hachiman a proud loner, he never cares if he's not cool in the eyes of others. He's very introspective which is very critical for this show, its a character who is loaded of counter thoughts before he even get the outcome from his actions. Some of his arguments and opinions or thoughts were not delivered in a flashy way (he narrated only) . Yukino on the other hand is like Hiki she's a loner because she's too smart and pretty, basically misunderstood for having an intimidating personality. While Yui is the cheerful girl, she's not as articulate like the other 2 mc's, but a person who's not afraid to express her care. We got characters here facing issues with their personalities which slowly changes or not? as the story progresses.
Misunderstandings are common for rom-coms, so this anime dissected the thoughts of every characters, it allowed me as a viewer to see it and interpret the situations, then Hiki will surprise you with his practical, unusual and loner-way of problem solving. Its not a perfect rom-com you may criticize the hiki-yukino-yui predictable love triangle outcome, the kind of service club they formed doesn't exist in real life, and its slow pacing. Its a type of anime that i can't give a perfect score but something special.

If you want to be entertained, this is one of the right show to watch. No need to be a culinary expert, as long as you're fond of eating and anime. You might end up hungry after watching every episodes. Souma (MC) isn't the main source of comedy here, he's not even a wacky character like luffy. He's a smooth operator, i like that his character was already built as a good cook from the start, though still lacking of experience. Unlike other anime with MC having good potential but fundamentally zero background/basics about their stuff. Most of
...
the Enjoyment here came from the situations like whenever they ridiculously react after they tasted the dish, some are awkward because of the ecchi scenes. Even some of the casual conversations are funny enough. You will eventually know why its really called FOOD WARS on its later episodes, don't wanna spoil but just think of the tv show "iron chef."
Just take the story as it is, enjoy and don't expect something dark or depth on it. Its about Yukihira souma trained to cook by his father since childhood. They own a diner but souma's old-man closed it to work abroad and to fund his education in totsuki academy, where the culinary adventure starts.
Art and sound are great! watch it on HD and you will appreciate it more. Food appearances may not be detailed or realistic all the time which is not really an issue unless you are keen about details or seeing the ingredients on its realistic art. Of course this show will also teach you cooking but don't expect to learn some advance techniques, even though they explained how the dishes were made. Its hilarious from ep. 1 to 24 but on a serious note, characters here are all aiming to improve their crafts, and achieve their personal goals.
i might not attempt to read the manga, so it will not spoil the 2nd season when i watch it. cheers!

I like the simplicity but far from being dull or boring, so don't get me wrong. What i meant was the entire package from its graphics, plot and characters. The feeling was always "light" when i watched every episodes. Probably the best word would be Balance, no excessive drama or wacky antics.
Story 8/10- The overview says its about futaba, misunderstood during her junior years so she had to changed her personality to gain friends in high school. This conflict was quickly resolved after few episodes thanks to the main guy(kou). She reunited with her childhood love, from there I thought the pace would
...
be faster but the story mostly revolves around kou, he's got personal issues related to his parting with futaba 3 years ago and why he changed his name. Within those conflicts they started living a new life in high school with a new set of "true friends" experiencing that blue spring ride of their youth
Art 7/10- maybe its just me, but some of the painting-like backgrounds and the blurry effects were not that effective for me.
Characters 8/10- well-portrayed characters, just the right amount of acting applicable for the situation. I just noticed a little bit too much of blushings and staring(eye to eye), i guess its a required element for romance lol!
Sound 8/10- sweet opening music, im not an expert about sound effects, i'd say it sounded the way it should sound in reality ^^
Enjoyment 7/10- I've read the manga so i felt short since its not complete. Maybe the simplicity that i noticed would be an intro for an exciting 2nd season, Hopefully.
Overall, i give it a 7 still worth your time watching, try to read the manga after completing the series, you will like it more coz i'm not sure if there will be season 2. Cheesy stuffs and life lessons are surely here, the main characters made some mistakes, it makes me even hate them sometimes, i only hated kou though because he's a slacker. In the end I realize its part of being young, and that makes a person grow.
