In both series, the main characters take on dangerous jobs/missions as a bounty hunter or "Getbacker" in hopes that their hard work would finally free them from their poverty and grumblings about having no money. Despite being very successful at what they do and completing their jobs, money still manages to elude them and onto the next job they go.

Aside from both series being similar in length, they take place in China, where a young emperor with a tragic past rises to take his rightful place on the thrown. Civil wars, internal disputes, distrust among imperial officials lead into conflicts of both brains and brawn. Helping the emperor become confident and competent is the main character of the anime--Shuurei (Saiunkoku Monogatari) & Shin (Kingdom)--a humble free spirit with immense passion to serve the emperor despite coming from a poor background. Of course, they are looked down upon by leaders and peers, but their genuine potential and talent in governing (Shuurei) and leading soldiers in war (Shin) will prove to the world that they're more than worthy to stand by the emperor's side. Both animes are immensely enjoyable and makes you so thankful that they're longer than the typical 13-25 ep series.

After the death of the protagonist's beloved parent, lives change as the princesses are displaced from their Kingdoms and forced into unfamiliar lands, keeping with them only one loyal subject. They vow to return, revenge fuelling their determination to become stronger. Their only companion puts their lives on the line for the future of this displaced princess, and along the way, develops feelings for her (Though romance is not the biggest theme in either of these mangas). Both princesses are seasoned with using the bow and are confident, headstrong heroines preparing a small army for battle. In Akatsuki no Yona, Yona's heroic deeds bring them around the country of Kouka, tackling small cases that lead to something greater. In Joou no Hana, Aki becomes a tactician for a country opposing the kingdom she was exiled from. In both mangas, you'll be smitten by their character development.

Eerie mysteries in both animes solved predominantly with logic (although Ghost Hunt involves more supernatural occurrences). In both animes the 2 main characters are partners in solving mysteries, separated by a considerable age gap. The younger accomplice is just a high schooler, but has more potential than initially thought, while the older accomplice specializes in what they do.

These 2 mangas take place predominantly in a school setting (as do most shoujo), and what I felt was pleasantly similar between them was how desperate the male protagonist would become whenever the main girl was in (or suspected to be in) some sort of danger. They lose their usual cool headedness and rush to the rescue. In both cases, the girl and the guy have a unique relationship that makes them very close but the girl refuses to entertain the thought that the guy might have romantic feelings for her. The adventure of how these characters transition into a couple is very enjoyable and well developed. Also, personality-wise the main girls are very violent, aggressive, and independent.

In both animes, when someone dislikes a person enough to wish that they'd disappear, they turn to some sketchy website and enter the person's name. In Btooom, the hated person is kidnapped and moved onto a stranded island with a bag of bombs and are forced into a game of survival since their lives were deeme dispensable by the people who knew them. In Jigoku Shoujo, the person is sent to hell where they are tortured for eternity because the person who chose them made a contract with the jigoku shoujo to get revenge for them.

In both animes, the lives of humans are being threatened and in humanity's attempt at staying alive, they borrow power from demons/yomi in order to fight back. Owari no Seraph is humanity's war against vampires, while Claymore is humanity's struggle against Yomi. Humans attain power from demons but are always on the edge of losing control of their bodies and soul to the demons that reside within them. They need to have strong control of their thoughts and emotions to prevent being taken over by the demons. When they lose control, they become an absolute monster in which case their comrades are obligated to kill them on sight.

Someone dies like every episode. You see a lot of shady characters appear but their purpose isn't made known until later. The art style is also pretty similar, especially the eyes (like the shape and size and how they are positioned on the face).

Arslan Senki (TV)
add

Both animes focus on wars between nations and the internal struggles within a nation, including traitors who are after power or the throne. In Arslan Senki the main character is the prince (king to be) himself, while in Kingdom the main character is a soldier who is aiming to become a general to the prince (king to be). Either way, both plots focus on making the prince into a King who rightfully belongs on the throne. Although the personalities of the two princes in these animes are rather unique, what makes them similar is their respect for human lives and compassion. They don't just think of their soldiers or citizens as livestock but truly value their lives and their loyalty to the nation. I also like how both animes go very in depth regarding war strategies and the importance of a clever tactician in turning the tables during war.

The main characters are human boys with slight supernatural abilities when it comes to demons/spirits/ghosts. Despite being human, they can see and interact with them. Both their grandmothers were exceptional at dealing with demons/ghosts and strangely, their grandmother is the only relative that is given importance or even mentioned in the anime. They both have "pet" cats which are actually demons that take on a cat form, but can transform into a larger more threatening form when needed, although Nyanko sensei and Rokumon have completely different personalities. These animes sort of have their own plot per episode so you can enjoy a fresh story that branches off from the main plot each episode for the most part. They both radiate a very mellow, slice of life kind of feel.

There animes both give off a very similar feel. The main character is a boy living under some kind of oppression and bent ton seeking revenge for the death of his comrades/"family". He starts off extremely powerless and scared, and eventually his drive for revenge gives him power and the perseverance to get stronger. In both animes it starts off a little uncertain. Like, you don't really know what to expect from it and the plot can become good or bad depending on what happens. And then the sudden fighting/bloodshed that catches you by surprise hooks you and suddenly you're excited for a new episode every week.

Along with the similarities listed in the previous recommendations. I found it fascinating how both animes have different types of they could specialize in with their power. For Naruto it's an element/elements while Hunter x Hunter is nen types, and each character has a natural affinity to a certain type. The way they test for a character's affinity is pretty similar too. Naruto uses special paper that changes properties when chakra is poured into it, while Hunter x Hunter uses leaf divination, where the cup of water with a floating leaf changes properties when nen is focused on it. When the characters develop skills specific to their type, they become stronger and their battles are funner to watch. Of course, the journey to getting there is also exciting.

The female protagonist is a princess who, due to unfortunate circumstances, loses her kingdom and is forced to travel the world (or worlds, in Tsubasa's case) starting with just one companion, a man who protects her with utmost loyalty and has no trouble putting his life on the line for her safety. They gain other loyal companions/friends on their journey. The princess starts off very weak and defenseless, but has the strong will to shed away her ignorance and learn about the world and about fighting, too. The princess also has to forget about her first love, though for different reasons. However, the hints of romance in both animes are very refreshing and there is a fair amount of comic relief that catches you off guard. In a good way.

The death of a loved one is the onset for the plot which spurs the protagonists to take action. Hak (in ANY) and Shin (Kingdom) are in circumstances that require them to protect the rightful heir to the throne despite their young age and minimal support. They have a true sense of duty and loyalty that brings them to lay their life on the line for the one they are protecting. There are serious power struggles among the royal ranks for the throne as well as others who are not of royal lineage. The person on the throne is much younger than expected and a story plays out on how their rule affects their kingdom. I love both animes.

It's been a long time since I watched Arata kangatari but after starting Akame ga Kill! I felt a little nostalgic because these two animes have a very similar feel. The main is an otherwise innocent and rather clueless boy who gets dragged into "another world" where he's forced to fight and collect a form of weapon. In both animes, the weapons being collected are selective of their users, have unique sets of abilities, and uncovering them is a fun adventure for the viewer.

Both the female mains have an innocent appeal, somewhat clumsy and always receives the help and protection of the male lead. However, both are admirable for their strong will and mindfulness of everyone's emotions around them. This next part may be somewhat of a spoiler for Nagi no Asukara, but the fact that Manaka loses her ability to love other people is closely similar to Sakura's loss of memories as well as her inability to have Syaoran's feelings reach her. Hikari loves Manaka, and Syaoran loves Sakura, but both girls are unable to receive those feelings because of some supernatural force taking their ability to love away in an exchange. Despite knowing the truth, the 2 male protagonists continue earnestly devoting themselves to the female protagonists.

Both have an interesting concept of magic, used in pursuit of obtaining something that holds immeasurable power/potential. In Tsubasa Chronicle the items are Sakura's feathers, and in Fate/Zero the item is the Holy Grail. Honour and insanity among the different characters are constantly coming into conflict to bring forth an engaging plot line. I also found that both their OSTs have similar feels/styles. If you like OSTs from one of these animes you'll certainly enjoy the OSTs from the other.

They are both short, 12 episode animes that take place in a school setting. The female protagonists both have a thing for eye patches and are considered "unusual" or alienated by their classmates. They both behave differently from everyone else and manage to drag the male protagonists into their strange sphere of influence, thereby setting him apart from his fellow peers as well. As time passes the boys naturally dissolve into the unusual world that the girls are "trapped" in and become a pillar of support for them. The happiness of the girls becomes the boys' primary goal above all else.

To start, both animes take place in a European setting. The protagonists have a undeniably die-hard loyal servant that would sacrifice anything to protect their masters, coincidentally, both servants in both animes go by the name Raven. They also possess a very noble and respected status and are expected to fulfill a prophecy, both prophecies involving their ultimate death. Humans on their own have no directly suoernatural ability (ex. they can't fly or shoot flames from their fists) but with contact from a "different world" humans can get supernatural beings to obey them (In Pandora Hearts there's chains from Abyss, in Hakushaku to Yousei there's various types of Fairies from the Fairy World). The antagonists of course, use this ability for a poor purpose and have a killing intent towards the main character. A less significant similarity is that in both animes, the main characters have blond hair and their servant has black hair.

The main characters live in an environment surrounded by demons/yokai, and by birth their status puts them at least a little above other demons (Inuyasha's father was a powerful and renown dog demon while Rikou's grandfather is the supreme commander of the Nura Clan/Lord of Pandemonium). They have a mix of human and demon blood, as Inuyasha is a half demon and Rikou is 3/4th human. As they adventure they discover that their human sides can serve as a strength and is not something to be ashamed of. Both protagonists invest their lives in becoming stronger than their related predecessors and sometimes takes on challenges they can't handle because of their pride and stubbornness. Ultimately they learn that in order to be successful, they must place their trust on their companions and learn that having help is not a weakness. There is one main villain they seek to defeat, one that the hands of death can't seem to grasp (Naraku/Hagoromo-Gitsune). These animes focus heavily on the coexistence and necessary teamwork between humans and demons in order to achieve a common goal. Onmyoji in Nurarihyon no Mago are like Demon Slayers (like Sango) in Inuyasha.

The story lines both start off with the protagonist waking up in an unfamiliar and isolated place alone, suffering from memory loss. Their closest partners are girls who help them come to terms with killing others. Both protagonists are troubled by the thought of becoming a murderer, but are forced to kill other people in order to survive. The animes both revolve around the theme of "Kill or be killed".
