Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a stunning space opera with such life-like and complex characters. The series offers detailed world building and fascinating ideological dilemmas. Whilst it may be easy to judge it by its cover as a long, boring and old OVA, it is truly much more than that.
The concept of a galactic war between two sides, one being an autocratic monarchy and the other being a democratic republic may sound a lot like Star Wars, however, the similarities begin and end there. both sides throughout and the series never tells the viewer which side to root for. Since there is no definitively bad or good side, when it comes to these two battling countries. Rather, there are good and bad people in both the Alliance and the Empire. The series is thus very mature in that way, how it encourages the viewer to also ponder on the actions of various characters. Such as if said actions were justified in the context of where the story was at that time.
The battles in LoGH are fascinating due to the importance of strategy and additionally the presence of realistic limitations, such as supply lines and jammed communications between ships. Whereas most sci-fi might overlook these matters since they focus rather on the spectacle, LoGH on the other hand manages to make the battles grand while simultaneously making it believable. It is after all a battle at a galactic scale.
I would also go into how great the cast of characters are, but I think that might require me to discuss some spoilers. Watching the show itself is the best way to experience them, rather than reading about them in a review.
To conclude, LoGH offers excellent world building, mature external and internal conflicts, a cast of captivating characters and lastly greatly detailed battles. Aside from some poor animation in the first "season", which eventually gets better; It has everything.
