Bleach is a truly cohesive work that plays to the strengths of the battle series genre with little fluff and fat. The characters are always moving forward, the story is engaging and iterates on itself smartly, it's constantly refining and executing on its themes, it's a near perfect showing of the battle genre. It pays off on investing in side characters, it rewards thinking about the themes and visual/textual metaphor with a deceptive amount of depth. It employs a mature cast and a strong grasp on real, tangibly complex emotion to great effect.

Fire Punch is niche as fuck.
That's just the beginning though. This is not something for the faint of heart and is not something for someone who thinks it will not appeal to them. This series is what it is and what it is is unhinged as hell. Think something like Mad Max but dropping copious amounts of acid. The world presented is depraved as hell and unhinged and on the brink of complete annihilation, and its inhabitants reflect that. People are reduced to their base impulses at times, horrible people are given free rein to be horrible people and good people are abused and everything has ... Apr 18, 2018

Let's get this out of the way: the visuals are gorgeous.
The plot and characters are not, especially the main guy who is kind of a scumbag with the body swap stuff. On top of that the plot has so many holes you could call it swiss cheese. So many inconsistencies and head scratchers and so many unanswered questions that the movie just never seemed to think about. Worth watching for the visuals but don't expect a story or characters on the level of something like A Silent Voice because you won't be getting one. You'll be getting a fine story with some forgettable characters. The ... Feb 24, 2016

PREFACE:
Lucky Star is stupid. Lucky Star is like, REALLY, REALLY stupid. But I love it. The genre of "Funny slice of life anime" could be called over-saturated by some, and a dead horse so far gone it's just dust now by others. But in the genre, Lucky Star is one of the few incredibly standout series that can manage to make you smile no matter what mood you're in. The only real way to describe the series is "Dumb, silly fun." Or "otaku bait" but who cares? PLOT/CHARACTERS: It has no real overarching plot to it, it's just about 4 (and then 10) girls going ... |
