The sweetest story about pure first love, ride or die friendship (man, the friendship in this one!!!) and the value of not stereotyping and judging people based on their looks.

The art is beautiful, the pacing is great (perfect for binging) and the characters are all such a treat (very big treat).

If you go into this expecting any dramatic plot twists and angsty developments between the characters though, you won't find that here. Though they do experience challenges and work toward overcoming them, it's all very uncomplicated and handled with a calming gentleness.

Go into this prepared to unknowingly have a smile constantly painted across your ... face coupled with intervals of pause the show to laugh out loud and just die from happiness hahahaha, definitely be ready to have yourself wrapped up in heart warming fuzzy feels, and prepare your mind to have an even deeper appreciation for the value of treating people for who they are and not how they look.

It was absolutely worth spending the time on. Melted my heart into a gelatinous elated puddle!!! 100% recommend this

I've only read 21 chapters of what is currently out but I just had to write a review for this and get more people reading this!!

This is a story about a lady who after being dumped by her betrothed for a lady of lesser birth, returns home to her father's manor and becomes an absolute boss woman in an attempt to make her people prosper. It is laced with politics, business, intellectual intrigue, and a healthy helping of female empowering. An absolute page turner!

What a lovely, intelligent and different heroine we have here! Who is not focused on love but on building her territory! There ... seems to be a budding love story in the horizon so please look forward to it. I am! haha But it is not the focus. It's about the journey of an intelligent woman who is using her knowledge for the betterment of her people and in a smart, warm, light way. It is rare to find such manga heroines among what we have currently in the manga world (so far as I am aware. If you know more do tell! hehe). They are truly hard to come by. So when you find one, you jump into the story with excitement!

The STORY is for a more mature readership as it has many elements of politics, governorship and business. The most fascinating thing for me though is that it is set in a "fairy tale"-like kingdom kind of setting. Which is great because it makes you feel relaxed and makes the mature adulting themes not overbearing.

The ART is absolutely beautiful!! The character designs are just so lovely! Of course this is not surprising considering that the premise is that the origin (and I stress the origin ALONE, while playing no further influence in the story thereafter) is an Otome game. So you will definitely get a feast for your eyes 100%.

The CHARACTERS are all very varied and interesting. The heroine of course shines the brightest and grows and grows with every successive task she takes on. Other characters are mostly supportive and not very fleshed out (thus far in the story anyway, there's still time) as their role is to help the heroine's attributes be more accentuated, but there are other supporting characters whose stories truly intrigue. You cannot wait to see how their development will contribute to the direction the story will take. It truly keeps you glued to the story.

ENJOYMENT is a little choppy at the beginning 2 or so chapters but as the story progresses and finds it's footing enjoyment just soars! I literally started reading this today and I am already at 21 chapters. I truly cannot even tell you where the time went while reading this. I was even at trouble to put it down to go feed my body and do other necessary things! haha

Art was beautiful!! The clothes were AMAZING!!!

Characters were different, layered, fun! I truly didn't get enough of them! This truly should get a second season seeing as the manga has published many chapters (will absolutely be reading that btw!)

Viewability. I really appreciated that it wasn't trashy and anyone could comfortably watch this.

Inspiring. Made me want to work hard for the things I am passionate about AND also made me really cheer for the characters as well.

Real. The characters had legit real struggles throughout the whole show but they did not overcome too easily nor was it too drawn out either.
They were also able to ... highlight the highly cutthroat nature of the fashion world with ease.


Pacing. I'm very very very pleasantly surprised at the pacing of this!! In just 12 episodes they were able to tell a really layered and lovely story without causing the show to suffer on account of being brief.

I literally watched this in one siting without being bored! It was thoroughly entertaining. Highly recommended.

Kyaaaannnn!!! This was such a good continuation!!! From the dangers, to the resolution, to the character development and even the way it wrapped up! Loved loved loved it!! Too bad it was just 12 episodes!! I would have wanted more!! But I appreciate them for not wrapping it up in any way that would deviate from the main story. After all the manga is still publishing! I absolutely hate it when animators destroy the main story just to wrap up an anime! So I appreciate the ending and I will of course go on to read the manga!! Love this story way too much to ... stop here!!
Absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a lovely story about love, royal obligations, rising to meet and overcome challenges, and working hard to make the dreams of the ones you care for come true! It was lovely!!

All these years that I have been watching anime (about 10 years thereabout) I 100 always thought that this anime in particular was just shoujo cliches thrown into a story with well-drawn characters in order to just excite shoujo manga lovers. So I steered clear of it like the plague! haha

I am here to pleasantly report that that was 100% far from the truth!!! And boy am I so glad I WAS WRONG and more so that I have watched it now when I am more mature in age and mind and so can truly appreciate it for what it truly is!! A love story ... between 2 people from different sides of society who have the same passions and would do anything to help each other achieve those goals and be better people beyond what their positions in society dictate!! Basically what any healthy love relationship should be! So good!

In regards to the visuals, the animation was done by Bones so do we really need to say any more? It was absolutely breath taking!! The scenery was so beautiful and healing it still calms me just thinking about it! That alone is reason enough to watch this anime.

The characters were such a lovely driving force for this anime. We see them change and grow beautifully even as we get glimpses into the pasts that shape them into who they are today. It truly makes you look forward to who they will be as the story progresses in the sequel and of course in the manga (you know you gotta read the manga to get all the juice beyond the little that can be shown in just two 12 episode seasons).

Final thoughts...
My goodness I am just shook at how good this anime actually is! It truly came out of left field for me and struck me in such a wonderful way!! So glad I finally unearthed it out of the anime archives and gave it a watch. Akagami no Shirayuki Hime has a new fan in me!

Now don't let the rating of this on MAL fool you!! This was really good!

If there's anything I've learnt from my recent anime movie watches on MAL, it's that the ratings can absolutely be misleading!! So glad I went with my gut and decided to find out for myself with each movie I've watched recently. If the synopsis appeals to you, check it out! Regardless of the overall score. You never know if a diamond is sleeping in the rough of poor user ratings on MAL (sincerely no offense to the users)

This was a lovely coming of age story about two friends and a ... girl who came into their lives and tested their friendship. Now if you're thinking that this is one of those angst filled love triangle type of stories that just make you tired with all the back and forth drama, then you might be glad to hear that it is not! On the contrary it takes you on a calm peaceful journey as we watch these 3 interact. And at the end it leaves you feeling really warm and satisfied.

The art has that old anime art charm that induces happy calming hormones, the sound fits perfectly with the slice of life nature of the story and the character development is astounding for the duration of a movie (a very good thing).

So if you are looking for something calm, relaxing and entertaining, then I highly recommend this! It's mature, well-paced and light. Loved it!!

I'll skip re-writing the synopsis and just let you know what kind of vibe I got from watching this and show what was so good about this that I gave it a 10. Possibly the first 10 I've ever given on any anime on MAL.

It's a story about how far a mum would go for the unique children she had with the man she loves! It's as simple as that.

...And yet so beautiful

It teaches you to stand for those you love, accept them as they are and let them thrive and be who they want to be while selflessly supporting them. It is wonderful.

So why ... 10? Umm, why not 10! Is the more appropriate question. The story, the art, the pacing, the characters and the enjoyment collectively absolutely warrant a 10! Anything less would be me lying to you.

If you are down and are having a hard time in life, or if you need a pick-me up to lift you out of a funk, this is what you need. Despite some sad occurrences that kicked me in the stomach, the response to those events by the characters in this movie is just what got me! It made me feel like there is nothing insurmountable as long as you determine to pick up and keep going!

And this movie does this so beautifully! It is not forceful in the least, but has such a calm inducing effect.

I absolutely recommend it as a stress reliever!

Why?
Because at the watching of this movie, stress relief is exactly what I needed. So you can trust this perspective! haha

In an age when anime is mostly (not entirely thank God) littered with dark, heavy and sexual themes, it is just so refreshing to find something that is MATURE, REALISTIC, CLEAN and REFRESHING! That's a combination that is hard to come by these days and so when you bump into it by accident on Netflix, you can't help but shed a tear of joy and happily smile through the whole experience!

This is a Slice of Life that can be appreciated by any mature audience. As with all slice of life tagged anime it makes your heart happy, brings a lovely calm to your mind and ... also makes you take a positive introspection into your own life or just life as a whole. You basically leave the anime happier and healthier! What's not to love!

I enjoyed this anime because I was really looking for something CLEAN FUN and MEANINGFUL to watch! And I am so glad to say that this anime ticked all those boxes!!

Clean, warm, funny, slice of life feels!!

That's just how to summarize this anime. If that is exactly what you are looking for then this is the anime to watch! Sometimes that is all you need!!

Characters are adorable and absolutely lovable. From the babies, to the kids, to the adults. You just like everyone!! hahaha

Art, perfect for the feel of the anime. Plus it's based on a super long running manga from back in the day so it definitely must be in line with the manga art style from it's early days. ... I liked it. It took me back to the good 'ol days.

Enjoyment, Augh!!! I can't even tell you! Finished it in almost one sitting cause it made me smile so much!!

They really need to make more anime like this.

ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND

There is always that special something about slice of life anime. I suppose it is the fact that it is shaped in a manner that you can both relate with (so you feel like you're walking down memory lane) and that at the same time relaxes you. That is why I can never look down on a slice of life anime and especially one that is done as masterfully as Hyouka!

Hyouka is not just a simple slice of life anime. It is actually chalk full of mystery. If anything it is a mystery anime set in slice of life. It follows the everyday club activities ... of the classics club as they solve seemingly simple mysteries in such epic ways that leaves your mind completely blown!! It has a way of making the simple complex and the complex simple and it does all that without making the viewer's head hurt.lol It is what you'd call a beautiful oxymoron.

The art is beyond breath taking, the music is simply fitting and the character development is done so cleverly and superbly!! You get too see more to the characters than their arch types. You see the darker side to Satoshi's happy go-lucky live-and-let-live approach and understand why his relationship with Mayaka has been the way that it has been since middle school. You get to see more of Mayaka than just the feisty tsundere that she is. You see Chitanda as more than just the curious girl who lights the fire under the belly of the classics club and you see Houtaro with all his genius grow from "energy-conserving" to finding his calling in life and watch him beautifully fall into it, with the help of Chitanda, who is both his Kryptonite and his salvation. It is delightful to watch!

Enjoyment is definitely a 10!! But I will give it an overall 9 because there is more yet to be gleaned into in this amazing work of art. I will continue the story in the manga and the light novel because they are still publishing. But as for the anime I will say that it was such an experience!! I fell in love with all the characters because they were all so relatable! I saw myself in every single one of them; the story because the story is well...life! and the mysteries because their epicness was in their complex simplicity! I cannot remember the last time an anime delivered all that it was supposed to and more as impeccably as Hyouka did!
