Both tell the story about a fairly normal, socially conscious boy who meets a girl with strange obsessions and is near enough forced to hang around with her, and he may even fall in love with the mysterious girl.

Both focus on themes of human failure and living on the edge of depression or paranoia among other things, both showing some parts of the world in a distorted way created by the human mind (Hallucination). However presented differently, with NHK focusing primarily on 1 persons experinces, whereas Paranoia Agent is a little more broad and is a lot more metaphoric with its meaning.

Whereas Eden of the East pulls you in with a much more mysterious feel, giving you the desire to watch more to piece together the mystery.
