Two drama anime where the main focus is grief and siblinghood. Both also are quite emotional, with their happy and sad moments. The animation in both are also pretty experimental. Watch the other anime if you want some well-written drama.

Both are psychological experimental anime done by Toei, where the main character tries to solve problems by unconventional methods, sometimes in a nearly extreme way. If you want some good old mind f-ck you would love the other anime, although Kuuchuu Buranko has no involvements of supernatural creatures.

Both are anime that attempt being horror but due to their terrible animation quality they end up being unvoluntarily funny. Either way, both have merit for at least trying and could be blamed for being a bad adaptation. Watch them if you want to have a laugh and maybe get disturbed.

Both are wholesome stories of schoolgirls having a good time together and forming a strong bond of friendship, with the ocassional intervention of a quirky teacher. Hidamari goes more the SOL way and Azumanga has a heavier focus on comedy, but I am sure that fans of any of the anime will surely enjoy the other series.

Both are dark comedies that feature a protagonist similar in appearance and personality: both are depressed, cynical, paranoid and overthinking, both also struggle with all that's wrong in the world for them to succeed. The animation in both also is similar, with surreal scenes and use of live-action imagery that enhances the feeling of angst and misery both protagonists undergo with. They are both pretty fast paced anime as well. (copied from my AniDB recommendation)

They're aesthetically similar and both also feature a confusing convoluted story. From the very, and I literally mean the very first scene you can see the similarities and the clear inspiration Mekakucity Actors took from Utena, particularly the movie. Monogatari Series: Second Season
|
The second season of Monogatari and Utena have the same central topic: The perception of what we consider truth. Both Utena and Monogatari feature adolescent characters with psychological issues and unresolved traumas which are explored very in depth, with an heroic but imperfect protagonist, a well constructed apparent villain and a strong supporting cast. Both also have a lot of symbolism, experimental animation and questionable scenes. What are you waiting to try the other anime as well?

While most comparisons between Penguindrum and Monogatari are among Bakemonogatari, I feel like Nisemonogatari is even closer to Mawaru Penguindrum in that regard. The most obvious part being the focus on sibling relationships, weird fetishitic scenes and a liminal aesthetic. Both also some of the most WTF scenes of all anime.

Two absurdist romantic comedy anime where the focus is on time travel and the different paradoxes it could create. Time travel here works in a similar way as well, as there is just one single timeline where the different mysteries presented are basically created by the other travels to the past. Animation style is also experimental in both, the biggest similarity being the use of real-life imagery. Heck, they're both charming comedies that you shouldn't miss if you like quirky romcoms.
