Angel Beats! is an excellent anime. But if you're going to watch it, I think it is only fair to give you warning. If you're anything like me, your heart WILL be touched.
If this anime was a person living in New York City, everyone would know about them. Why? Because everyone who sees them would experience powerful surges of emotion and would more likely than not burst into tears. This anime does a spectacular job at invoking emotions deep within the human soul.
It's not necessarily a sad anime. In fact, by the end, it seems as if all the characters will wind up happy. But
...
it still left a bittersweet feeling in my chest.
If you're just looking for a casual show to watch without getting invested in the characters' back-stories, futures, and current situations, avoid this anime. This anime was the second to successfully move me to tears, and even then, the first one only did it once. Angel Beats! had me in a state of emotional stimulation throughout almost the entire series, as well as a few days after I finished.
The anime also has a really good soundtrack, which is something I rarely pay attention to in any anime. For this one, though, there were not only great songs, but the music actually played a part in the plot. What's that? You want to know how they integrated music into the story? Ah ah ah, no spoilers. You'll have to watch it for that. ;-)
If I haven't piqued your curiosity enough already, I'll let you in on something: the title, Angel Beats!, has multiple meanings. Happy watching!

This review will be on both Fate/Zero and Fate/Zero Season 2, which I am counting as a single entity. My apologies for any confusion.
The main problem most people seem to have with this anime is the historical "inaccuracies". I put that in quotation marks because there's really no way to be 100% certain about the traits of the historical figures in the anime anyway.
For example, (and no this is not in the anime so it's not a spoiler) many people think Napoléon Bonaparte was short, when in reality this was a misconception due to the difference between English feet and French feet. He was actually
...
average height for his time. Well, Napoléon was around less than 300 years ago. The historical figures in this anime are WAAAAAY older than that. So before you complain about a fantasy anime getting historical facts wrong, why don't you complain about SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS getting historical facts wrong?
Now that that's out of the way, this anime is filled with lots of great action, suspense, thrills, etc. It's also got some nice moral ambiguity built in. Not to mention it's chock full of quotes that sound like they should be actual famous quotes. To name a few without spoiling too much:
"The world's laws do not apply to us, so we must carefully obey the laws we set for ourselves."
"Using a simple method to accomplish something impressive far outshines
using a complex method to achieve the same thing."
"They call certain methods of fighting good and others evil, acting as if there were some nobility to the battlefield. Such illusions, perpetrated by heroes throughout history, have led countless young men to their bloody deaths, all for the sake of this valor and glory."
I also have great respect for this anime in the lack of fan service provided. There's lots of great anime with lots of unnecessary cleavage and/or panty shots; this is not one of them. The only romance included is essential to the plot, and even that doesn't have much emphasis.
I'm not saying I'm totally against anime that have, say, a scene where a girl realizes a boy is looking somewhere he probably shouldn't be looking and slaps him in the face. That kind of comedy can be valuable to a story in its own way. But it's nice to have an anime with little-to-no focus on sexual themes.
I highly recommend this as a great action/adventure/fantasy anime with some good moral dilemmas thrown in.

Nearly every other anime fan I've talked to has recommended this to me. I held off on watching it for a long time though because I usually stick to shorter anime, but now I've finally caved.
I have to admit, it was better than I expected. Not that I expected it to be bad, but well....
Long anime tend to include lots of unnecessary details. Sometimes entire episodes are completely irrelevant to the overall plot. There's also some episodes that feel like they needed something to fill in the space and decided to hire some second graders to write it for them.
FMA: Brotherhood, thankfully, had none of
...
those. They kept the story going without any pauses. I was constantly on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. Everything had its place in the story. Not a single episode passed without contributing to the plot. Hallelujah.
One problem in both long and short anime alike is often the ending. Since a lot of anime are based on manga or light novels, they are sometimes released before the source material is finished. Therefore, the anime may have that fancy "Completed" status, but it's actually just waiting for season 2. Which may never happen anyway, if the initial release isn't popular enough. Of course, there are also endings that are just plain bad, either leaving too much hanging or just not being well-written.
FMA: Brotherhood, again, did not have this problem in the slightest. The ending it gave was definite, conclusive, fulfilling, and, as if the writers were answering my prayers, happy. I hope that's not too much of a spoiler. I've seen a lot of good anime with endings that literally bring tears to my eyes. That's not a bad thing; on the contrary, that means it was really well-written. But I personally prefer happy endings.
In conclusion, if you're like me and are hesitant to watch anime longer than 50 episodes, don't worry. This anime is worth the time. Watch it. You won't regret it.
