I can't help but feel slightly underwhelmed.
Don't get me wrong, the movie has a lot of positive sites, and I consider one of them to be the extensive scene of the MCs living in the survivor camp. It is a much neaded moment to catch a breath and I did not feel like the movie was unnecessarily stretched at any point (though it feels like they make Asuka more annoying with every rendition of the character).
The artwork was phenomenal and most of the CG was really well implemented. There were a few moments like the blue particle waves that felt a bit weird and the

photoshopped real face of Space Rei looked ridiculous in combination with drawn hair and a drawn environment, but overall, the visuals were very pleasing, coombining good elements of 3.x and 2.x.
And I'm also not one of the people complaining about the happy ending. I think it fits fairly well as a final goodbye to the series, though the existence of the timeloop was revealed a little too late for my taste, but that does not influence my review as I still respect the creative decision.
However, story-wise, I consider this to be the weakest out of all rebuild movies. That is for two main reasons.
1. The movie tries to check off every mark, showing all of the old characters we are supposed to remember and referencing original scenes from the series and End of Evangelion eventhough the storyline differs enormously, peaking in an unbevielably cringe implemented mention of the original series' title "Neon Genesis". Doing that, it falls short in the same categories as a lot of western media, most popularly Star Wars with The Force Awakens (or Solo if you will), trying to please the viewer by showing off all old elements one could want. This collage feels more like a cheap trick than heartfelt righting and did not work for me at all.
2. The second half of the movie just tries to include way too much. They lost me at the anti-universe with quantum jumps, which to my knowledge (via googling it) only exists in this movie. Not only does it come out of nowhere and sound extremely cliché (basically any sci-fi movie's explenation for how unexplainable stuff works these days), it also played absolutely no role whatsoever as they quickly transitioned into the inner fictional world that played a much larger role. I get that the in-universe explanation for the inner world is to exist within the anti-universe, but they're just taking unnecessary steps to make it overly complicated. Thus, the second half barely had time to finish its scenes as compared to the first half, resulting in a lot of cuts and quick scenes that might have been phenomenal if shown with more time in mind.
Having said all that, it still was a good movie and I did not feel like my time was wasted. Everything I said, of course, is how I personally felt about the movie, apparently many other fans have liked it a lot considering its current reviews, and I'm happy for you if you did. Maybe to you, this movie was what the 2nd one was to me.
I wanted to think of some kind of smart statement to put here in order to conclude my review, but I couldn't really think of any so instead I'll just cut it off mid-se
