The anime that surprised me most in 2018, was unsuspectingly, a show that I went into with 0 expectations, a show that I only even started because it was the first thing to air last January, and a show that immediately, and almost unfairly, secured the spot for not only my Anime of the Year, but also for one of my favorite anime of all time.
A Place Further Than the Universe tells the heartwarming tale of 4 girls on a journey that leads to Antarctica. Each of the girls have their own distinct motivations for wanting to make the harsh journey to the place

further than the universe, all spurred to motion by Shirase, who’s been fighting to go to Antarctica ever since her Mom died there on an expedition a few years earlier.
Nothing I can say about A Place Further Than the Universe can give it the justice it deserves. Practically every aspect of the show is simply spectacular, and it’s storyline is not only deeply moving, but also absolutely inspiring. It compelled me to put my youth into motion, and pushed me to take that one step into the unknown I needed to achieve my dreams and make the most of my life. It was a wake up call, that made me feel like I couldn’t just sit around and stumble through life anymore, waiting for the adventure to come to me and my goals to meet themselves. No, I’ve got to say my dreams out loud, and work towards them myself! And if anyone tells me what I can’t achieve, I’ll just have to scream “In your face!” like Shirase when I do! A Place Further than the Universe is perhaps, even the reason that I’m writing this review right now, as actually writing a review was always something I wanted to do, but, until now, I was Mari, always too scared to take that leap.
If you take anything away from this review, it’s to please please please watch A Place Further than the Universe, I promise, you won’t regret it!
