I went into this expecting a fun rom-com and although it delivers on that part, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it does a whole lot more too. I won't say that this is the best rom-com out there, but it is quite unique in its own way. Despite what the name of the show suggests, this is not an action heavy show. It's more apt to describe it as a slice of life romantic comedy with sprinkles of action here and there. There is an overarching story behind the rom-com of it all that gradually unravels as the episodes go by, and that
...
is quite fun and interesting as well. There is some fanservice, but it doesn't detract from the story at all. I'm sure some people would feel like dropping the show in the early episodes due to various reasons, but I do assure you that it gets better as the show progresses.
Art style and Character Design : The art style is vibrant and dynamic. Character designs are slightly generic, but some characters are rather unique looking in their attire. There are several extended gag scenes where the use of good color combinations, shading and clever use of art styles, give off an entirely different feel to the show.
Animation : The studio didn't cheap out on the budget in this as the animation is overall very fluid and pretty to look at.
Voice Acting : Voice acting is just brilliant. The general voice acting is overall great, but the chūnibyō parts are especially hilarious. Minor spoiler that is more like a point of appreciation rather than a spoiler - Look out for the episode where the VA just kills it with a monologue. My jaw dropped while hearing it, it was that good.
Direction : The direction and pacing of the show is just right. It's not too fast and not too slow. There are episodes where they approach non-linear storytelling and it might seem confusing at first, but everything falls into place when more information gets revealed over time.
Story : I'd say the rom-com story is pretty good with some unique elements to it, but the overarching story that lies at the back end is interesting and what makes it even more unique.
Overall, this was a good show to watch. I'm sad that this doesn't have more seasons as I would've liked to see more shenanigans of the main and supporting cast.

I don't expect a rom-com anime to deliver on the intricacies of a romantic relationship. I'm also fine with tropes and cliches etched into a story if it makes sense and is done well. I'm not bothered with characters that are one-dimensional and have a single purpose in the story. I'm okay with mediocre storytelling and as along as I can have some decent goofs and laughs. I'm not a tough customer is the basic gist of what I'm trying to say.
With that being said, you'd thing that even if this show is mediocre I'd probably like it to a certain degree. If you think
...
that, you'd be wrong. To start off, as most people would agree that this show has probably the worst main character in recent times. His lack of everything makes the show unbearable to watch. If you think a wishy-washy pushover that is stepped on by everyone and somehow has women falling all over him is a good character to watch, then I'd very strongly disagree with you. It would be bearable or even enjoyable if the story and jokes made it that way. Too bad though, as this has piss-poor comedy if you can even call it that.
The story is about misunderstandings and how the main characters get caught up in them and have to lie to keep themselves afloat from hurting their loved ones. The premise alone isn't bad, some characters even though being cliche aren't bad either. It's the contrived story-telling and the lack of any good comedy along with an absolute cardboard of a main character that makes this show a chore to watch. I was hoping for something good to happen and make things enjoyable, but that moment never came.
A romantic comedy with adult characters is the main reason I decided to give this a try. I had high hopes given that it has a decent rating as well. A story about misunderstandings can be very enjoyable and well-written, sadly this one isn't. If you're looking for romance or comedy or a decent story about misunderstandings I'd advise you to stay away from this pathetic attempt.

If you look at the top most helpful reviews of this anime, you'll mostly see 2s, 3s or 4s. I honestly don't get the amount of hate for this anime. It doesn't claim to be something very unique or groundbreaking, nor does it attempt to be. So rating it low just because you wanted it to be something it is not, when it never claimed to to be that, is absurd.
It's a fantasy action adventure comedy with fanservice, and it does its job well in that department. Sure, it has a cliché good guy main character, and most characters are clichés as well, but that
...
doesn't necessarily make it a bad anime.
The story is decent and the pacing of the series is good. The animation is good and the music is okay. The sense of being in a fantasy MMORPG world is its main unique selling point for me. The journey of the main character and how he discovers himself while making allies and friends along the way is what I like about the anime.
If you're looking for a serious thought provoking anime, you're looking in the wrong place. It's a fun adventure of a guy who's in love and wants to become stronger to protect people/women set in a fantasy/MMORPG setting.

*Disclaimer - This is my first review on MAL.
I feel as if this is the most realistic romantic comedy/drama anime I've seen. I'm not sure about how realistically the amnesia is handled, but it felt real enough to fool a person like me who knows little to nothing about it. The best thing I can take away from this anime is that you can have realistic emotions and characters portrayed in a story without it being overly dramatic or boring.
Characters -
They are brash, impulsive, stupid and most importantly flawed. They feel like real life people. Imperfect real people who know exactly what to do
...
at times and have no clue how to handle things at times. Sometimes those actions pay off and sometimes they don't just like in real life.
Relationships -
The relationships between friends and lovers is handled realistically as well. There are no forced situations between them and they handle situations in a mature manner and sometimes in a not so mature manner, again just like in real life. Also, it's refreshing to see characters act their age.
Story -
The story is well written and the screenplay is great, but there are times when you feel like nothing is happening and they could've easily done away with it, but I feel that it added to the feeling of the character's life being mundane at times. The pacing seemed fine although I feel that there was a lot of repetitive dialogue between the characters where they discussed exactly the same thing they did a few episodes ago. Again, I feel it added to the realness of the relationship and characters where in real life we too often discuss the same things over and over again.
Animation and music -
Animation is top notch and so is the voice acting. I didn't care much for the music though, but I think the background score was good enough.
Enjoyment -
I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of Tada Banri and the people around him. What I got sick of was him saying his name over and over and over again.
Final thoughts -
To me the story and characters felt real unlike in most anime where you know that this situation would never take place or a character would never do anything like that. That doesn't mean that it was boring and/or devoid of joy, it was anything but that.
