Fruits Basket 1st Season

The main protagonist in both series is placed in a situation that is very much out of their element. Fruits Basket is rather heavier on drama while Ouran High School Host Club has a substantial amount of comedy, but both share numerous elements. For starters, both somewhat have this ‘reverse-harem concept going on. The main/lead female in each show is both sweet, kind, endearing and most importantly, lovable. They both take place in a high school setting, have similar character designs and character archetypes. When it comes to storyline and plot they have nothing in common, however, both female characters’ goal is to make their mothers proud and sometimes the characters share loneliness. They both provide a heartwrenching coming-of-age story about assembling your family and carving your place into a world that’s determined to trap you. Nonetheless, they are both amusing, lighthearted, comedic, with some romance.

Devilman: Crybaby

Devilman: Crybaby and Parasyte -the maxim- are set up similarly, The themes they explore are comparable: humanity’s weak grasp on power and the internal struggle of containing one’s inner beast. In terms of graphic content and hidden symbolism, these two anime are the most comparable to each other. In Parasyte, aliens from another world can disguise themselves as humans, and in Devilman, demons do the same. However, Devilman offers a lot more pathos and storytelling, while Patasyte focuses more on the inner struggles of characters. In terms of main characters and protagonist, Akira (Devilman) and Shiniki (Parasyte), have similar beginnings in their respective shows. They both are somewhat weak teenagers, and even after gaining powers, they aren’t particularly strong either. Both series question human morality and include many philosophical themes. It’s action-packed, filled with a lot of violence, with plenty of horrors, blood, and gore.

Manipulation and revenge are the basis of both these shows. The main characters use their intellect to become calculative tacticians to execute their well-crafted revenge plan. Lelouch and Avilio both seek revenge for their loved ones, and the Brattanian royal family is comparable to Mafia families in their ruthlessness. To execute their plans, both protagonists must hide their true identities, yet they hide in plain sight. The setting and atmosphere of each show are dissimilar, however, the storylines parallel in their dark and vengeful plot.

Violet Evergarden

Aside from stunning visuals, both protagonists have a lot in common and share qualities; both are professional in anything they do. Through their jobs, in both anime, they try to empathize with humans properly and understand human feelings. Violet Evergarden and Death Parade present the protagonist’s story of life in similar ways, and both anime can easily move their audience. In contrast, while Violet Evergarden focuses on the “weight of words,” Death Parade fixates on how “actions are louder than words.” Death Parade may also be more psychological oriented and Violet Evergaden is primarily a drama, however, both have fantasy aspects as well.
