Both depict the stories of young women who are on a journey to unravel messages left to them by people of their past. While Frieren takes place during European medieval times, Violet Evergarden seems to be post-industrial revolution era. Both girls have light hair and striking light eyes, and are conventionally quite pretty. Their monotone, soldier-like voices are uncanny, but as you continue watching the series you'll notice how many layers of emotions they hide underneath. While Frieren has more world-building, Violet Evergarden focuses more on Violet's (the main character) psyche and inner turmoils. Whilst sparse, VE does have a couple of action scenes, whereas in Frieren, fighting is showcased in almost every episode. Both, however, hold the same melancholy tone that made my chest ache throughout. Basically, both series are fantastic! If you like slice of life; emotional anime, you might like Violet Evergarden more, but if you prefer action then Frieren might be it for you!

Both are beautifully colored and animated cleanly. The somber and melancholy aura that Fena sometimes gives off reminds me a lot of VE. The two MCs have polar opposite personalities but are both strong women who are striving to become better people. The love interests in both animes have a feeling of unattainability, even when Fena's love interest is right in front of her. While Fena is trying to reach a mystical place, Violet searches to find the meaning of something that she herself does not understand. The difference in the plot doesn't hide the fact that the true meaning of their adventures is what's helping them to live on, even when they themselves don't want to. The seemingly slow-paced, yet attention-grabbing qualities of both make me absolutely in love with them.
