First of all, I want to let everyone know that I am both reading the series' material and watching the anime at the same time. I have not gotten anywhere close to the chapters where many people are saying "Omg, it gets really good around the 400 chapters". I am only in about 150 chapters, and to give perspective it's basically the halfway point of the first arc of the second season. Now that I have stated where my stance with where I am in both anime and webtoons, I can start the official review.
When I looked at Tower of God, I was not amazed
...
by it at all. To be honest I was more disappointed by how much hype it was receiving for. Still, I gave the anime I try because there has to be something good of something that has received that much hype. But, I was only disappointed by it, the first 3 episodes were really bland. There was nothing to get at, no plot progression, no character development, no world-building, and many more. At that time all I loved was Khun because of how he strategizes, but that's all. I was about to drop it with a rating of 4. Still, something that stopped me was the burning questions I had about who Bam was? what happened on the outside? what's the importance of the 13-month series needles that Yuri gave? The lack of information made me crave for the answer, so I continued on hoping for some answers.
Through episode 4-7, I actually got interested in the cast, and their backstory. The story was a slow-paced, I still came back to see the next episode because of how intricate their backstory is and I finally got used to the animation, so I wasn't suffering the way through. Though I did not get the answers that I wanted, which made me a bit mad, so I was again on the verge of dropping it. Because I am a manga reader, I thought why not give webtoons I try? Maybe the adaptation sucked.
So over that week, I started reading Tower of God, and my god the art was horrendous and I was right with everything on my anime description, it lacked a lot of things. Then at the end of the first season, which will be episode 13 of the anime, I was blown away what the author did. I did not think that would ever happen. I was even more curious to the point that I really start to think that it was the series strong point.
I WAS WRONG ABOUT ALL MY ASSUMPTIONS WITH ANIME DESCRIPTION.
Then going back to watch the anime, and I was really enjoying the show because now the questions made the series the driving force, and the cast actually began to develop into a solid show too. By this time my rating had gone to a 6-7. But, when episode 9 aired it only pushed by liking higher to 7-8.
During that time I was reading more and more of the webtoons and realized that the first season was never a season, but a prologue to the actual story, which begins in the second season. While reading it, everything that was criticized was getting better and better. From character development to world-building, it was better. By now my decision and standpoint on this series are actually really good though there are drawbacks, which I am overlooking due to how good it is. I will continue to support this show and I can finally understand why readers say it is good.
Also, Bam is not a fricken simp. I don't know why but people say he is a fricken simp, but he isn't. If the only person that you have ever known is gone and the person that has taught you everything, what are you going to do? Stay back and give up. No, you would try to find it. If Rachel wasn't a girl, he would still try to find him/her.
Overall I am enjoying the series and I hope anime viewers don't look over this as a dumb anime show with nothing good. It truly is good.
