The anime focuses around a small cast of characters and their interactions. Other than magic, there is not much thought given to fantastical elements or world-building. That being said, the characters are generally well-written. They each have unique goals, ideals, and worries that they grapple with. The story supports this with backstories of their upbringing and experiences. Set in a royal background, a prevalent theme is the struggle of becoming your own ideal vs conforming to the ideals and responsibilities others have of you. under the circumstances, it is sometimes difficult to believe the extreme lengths that characters are willing to go to achieve their goals. The show does a very good job of getting the viewer to sympathize with the characters, but it comes off as a bit overdramatic. I lost immersion towards the end of the show because I thought the plot was too contrived or cheesy.
Overall, viewers who enjoy drama may enjoy this anime, but those who place importance on the believability of the plot may feel like the anime betrayed their expectations in the end. As you may have read from other mixed reviews, the general agreement is that the last 3-4 episodes are kind of a mess compared to the rest of the show. If the last few episodes had wrapped the story up in a better way, I would've given the anime an 8.
