Both are Sci-Fi genre and set in space. Both tackle the topic of survival, whereas Yamato 2199 revolves about survival of humanity, Astra focuses more on survival of the team. Yamato 2199 is more serious and dramatic while Astra is lighter and has humor. But most importantly, both shows explore humanity and ethical, philosophical issues. While Astra focuses on character development, Yamato 2199 is enforcing the values humans are not ready to abandon despite of desperate odds. Both shows are amazing and a must watch for Sci-Fi and space fans. They will also teach you something and both are very mature, with very minimal fan service.

It is surprising that people here do not see the similarities between D-Frag and Angel Beats. Both use a school setting but only as a background while following the shenanigans of the main cast. Both have a male lead with orange hair, Kazama and Otonashi. Both have petite loli love interests, Roka and Kanade Tachibana. Both have a strong purple haired leaders of their clubs, Chitose and Yurippe. Both have a strong focus on humor and are one of the funniest anime shows I have seen. But while Angel Beats follows its supernatural drama, D-Frag makes use of the slice of life genre and generally low stakes. It really baffles me how nobody else thought of Angel Beats while watching D-Frag. Some people even recommended Gurren Lagann. Like seriously, are you people crazy?
