Cat Soup and Kaiba both have a surreal, whimsical quality to their story, characters and animation. Their worlds are both wildly imaginative and fantastic, but a solid realization of the characters and their circumstances keep them grounded and engaging.

Although on the surface there seems to be little in common between Mushishi and She and Her Cat, both feature, at their core, very rich and human stories, told with great sensitivity. The visuals, though one is colour, the other black and white, achieve a similar feel with subtle but eloquent animation, framed within leisurely, lingering shots.

Both series feature mysterious, darkly charismatic male leads with otherwordly powers. Though set in different time periods and geographical locations, they both feature fantastic character designs and tight, elegantly choreographed action sequences. Thematically, characters in both series struggle with what constitutes good and evil, as well as the meaning of being human.
