VERY MINOR SPOILERS for episode 1 and 3
CSM is not a terrible anime. But it is not an anime which I would recomend.
First let's talk about the positives. The episodes are quite well paced there is not a moment when you would get bored and at the same time it is not chaotic. Viewer can easily folow the plot and will not be confused by the sequence of events. There is no(as of episode 3) situation that would happened for pure shock value and lacked any in show explanation. So it's safe to say that CSM passes th"3 episode rule" test.
The character design
...
while not revolutionary nor groundbreaking is ditinct enough that you will be able to recognize the characters at the first glance so it's definitly not a case of "the same anime face" syndrom.
And that's unfortunetly where the good things end.
The animation: It's not too bad but it is a far cry from the visual feast that has been pesented to us in the trailers. I think we can feel a little bit betrayed about it even though it was known before the airing that the show will not deliver. The most eye soaring is the utilization of the CGI in the fighting scenes. It's not the worst CGI ever but it's not something that would deserve the title of the anime of the year.
The characters aka the bane of this show.
I was told by some manga readers that this is the character driven story. If that is the case I don't know what kind of crazy characted development they are going to go through because, as of now, they are insufferable..
Denji- our MC our "hero" an absolute idiot he shouldn't have lived through first episode. Compare to him Naruto or Goku from the first volumes of the manga is an f-ing geniuses. Denji is taking the archetype of an stupid shounen protagonist and making it even worse. First of them is to eat a pice of bread with jam but he is too stupid to get jam. The other one is to get laid. The only thing he is talking about are boobs. And normaly this would be played for comical effect like in Urusei Yatsura but here it is serious which makes it pathetic. It's like reading a Tumbler post with sexual fantasies of an obnoxious sociophatic 14 years old.
Power- Another idiot she tries to exploit Denji only to get exploited by someone who seems much less cunning that her. Her perpous in the story seems to be sor of an antagonis/rival for Denji we'll see what will be done with her character but so far she hasn't impressed me.
Makima- Makima doesn't talk much and seems not to have any agency of her own she seems to be more of an narative tool than an actuall character
Aki- finally a good character. He has a good reason for doing what he is doing and is not a total dummy. I hope we'll see more of him.
Just as SAO became a massive hit ten years ago and was follwed by an endless stream of iskekai and other animes with RPG/video game elements the succes of Kimetsu no Yaiba has sprouted a series of Demon Hunter animes. Now it's CSM earlier JJK. It is all the same story (at the begginig at least) A teenage boy/men wants to live normal life but due to some circumstances is put in position where he has to fight demons.
Of those 3 CSM is the most "mature" show or rather what a teenager would think of when he hear "mature". CSM for anime is what Family Guy is for comedy a show advertise "for mature audience" because of how "inaproppriet" it is. In reality will probably be mostly enjoyed by teenage abudience as the forbiden fruit alwayes taset the sweetest.
for now I giving it 5/10 and I hope it will get better though I'm affraid those hopes are futile.
