Never have i been driven by this much passion, been fully compelled to write a review, but this manga, it can truly have a power over you in how low it can get, terrible fetish sex scenes absolutely gross imagery repetitive storylines and a main character who becomes a actual rapist for no reason while it tries to shove down some kind of optimistic message down your throat, you can read the first volume and jump right into the next it simply wont make a difference except the absolute toll it'll have in your sanity. Nothing in this manga makes any sense at all, its
...
lore, character motivations the whole point of the story was simply to be as bad as it could get it seems. Trowing cliche horror and hollywood plots into a blender and making the most grotesque almagamation of pure shit. This manga is a real masterpiece of crap reading it oozed off a feeling of real ecstasy and i assure you finishing it would be the same, despite this manga being absolute garbage i beg of you, those who are fortunate enough to ever come by this and have the chance to read it, PLEASE DO, this manga is a absolute must read of pure shit, more people need to truly experience this story, it is truly amazing how it tosses everything aside, its only commitment is to how trashy it can get.
THANK YOU KOJI MAKI FOR WRITING THIS ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE FOR THE AGES, TRUE HONEST TEARS OF AMAZEMENT WERE SHED AS I FINISHED THIS MANGA AND I HOPE MANY MORE PEOPLE CAN SHARE THIS SAME FEELING.
SIMPLY THANK YOU.

Black Angels is probably one of the most obscure Long Running Battle Shounen from 80s Weekly Shounen Jump, it also happens to predate by a few years a lot of the flagship series during that time, although it did run alongside the several popular series at the time (i.e Fist of the North Star, Kinnikuman and Dragon Ball) and was similar yet different enough to stand on it's own and be extremely unique.
Story:
Well the story started out pretty simple with mini-arcs that were resolved in one or two chapters, they were decent enough and entertaining and did a pretty good job of introducing the
...
characters, but the story truly starts when Yukito gets his backstory arc, that where concepts of the "Black Angels" and their enemy "The Dragonsfang Syndicate" with their doomsday plan got introduced, that's where the series basically becomes a very insane battle shounen with the different wacky enemeis Dragonsfang sends their way and the several weird martial arts techniques that are worthy of being in Sakigake!! Otokojuku's Minmei Publishing Company Books, after that arc and a pretty surprising twist the series pretty much goes into a Post-Apocalyptic arc where several warlods are fighting over some important mcgufinn, the following and last arc is the White Angels arc which pretty much turns the series over it's head, introducing weird superpowers and a new group of villains the main character have to fight, and it's a alright arc, it's weird and convoluted plot points really takes away from it but it works, the ending is fine but it could've been way better and more impactful but it wasn't, but the actual ending is ok and nothing that will take you out of the experience.
7/10
Art:
Shinji Harimatsu's artwork is good, nothing that i'd say is amazing or will blow you away but it looks good and he draws some incredible action scenes, he kinda was the mentor of Saruwatari Tetsuya (author of Tough and Riki-Oh) so you'll definitly find some similarities between their artworks, especially when drawing big ugly dudes, overall the art is good and stylish and can deliver some pretty good action.
8/10
Characters:
The main 5 characters Yukito, Matsuda, Judy and Reira are pretty good i really love how their relationship grows over time and it really makes you feel for some characters solely for the fact you see their friendship build up, they are probably the best characters in the series, the other Black Angels are also pretty cool but i found them to be somewhat unmemorable, after the Black Beasts arc ends and some characters end up passing away they had some new characters, but the most important ones are probably Kiba amd Asuka, Kiba pissed me off at first since he was a look alike of a previous character, had pretty much the same personality and even in universe character acknowledge that he is just like the previous character who died but he did grow onto his own character and a pretty good one at that, the other one is Asuka, he is a character i liked from the get go, he had a very cool fighting style with his deadly poker cards, and he is just oozing with style, the villains are definition of ok, none of them really stand out aside from the final ones, some of them aren't even fighters and just rich bigshots, or they are just fodder made for the main characters to kill.
8/10
Overall:
It's a very enjoyable series if you are one of the few people on the western world interested in checking it out, if you are a fan of Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya, Riki-Oh and Sakigake!! Otokojuku this series is def up you alley, good art, manly and likeable main characters and overall great action that most would enjoy, this series really deserves more attention given that it predates a lot of series and is a classic most have forgotten despite it's undeniable qualities.

There isn't much to say about this short series, it might as well have been a arc in the main series instead of being it's own thing, so this will be a short review.
Art:
It's Itagaki, his art is a acquired taste but i love it.
8/10
Characters:
Funnily enough, this series is very character driven, it's interesting seeing Itagaki's interpretation of a younger Bunshinchi, alongside with his friendship with Kido, it makes for some satisfying interactions.
The Story:
It's mostly about the 2 main characters relationship and goals, there's this former sumo wrestler that shows up, he's pretty much a really strong jerk of the likes of Yujiro and to
...
some extent Shozan, but there isn't much to him that makes him memorable in any way, too bad that this has pretty much no impact in the main series except that it is some extra content
Overall
It's an ok spin-off/prequel that does some decent stuff, i would only recommend it for those who are already familiar with the series

Garouden is the manga adaptation of the famous Martial Arts franchise of the same name, if you are a Baki the Grappler enjoyer you probably has heard of this series due to them having the same Artist and Martial Arts enthusiast, Keisuke Itagaki, and well, you wouldn't be wrong if you guessed that both of these manga are extremely similar to each other, to the point that nowadays, Garouden has been retconned to be part of the same universe as Baki, the series also suffers from the same issues and problems i have with Baki so it's similarities aren't that great of a thing.
The Art:
...
Itagaki's art style is very "peculiar" and odd looking, for some it can look ugly, gross, unappealling, etc, but i really like he's artstyle, i'd even say it's one of my favorite art styles in the manga industry, the over-the-top expressions and the easy to follow action scenes are extremely satisfying and easy to get through, the art has an certain fluidity to it, you can also see a lot of the artists evolution through out the years, since the series started in the mid 90s and only "concluded" in the early 2010s.
9/10
Characters:
Tanba Bunshichi is the main character, and he is alright, not great just alright, he is a cocky dojo crasher who only lives for fighting, he also doesn't really care about honor or any traditions since he isn't above using dirty tricks to win street brawls, but much like in Baki the side-characters are the ones that steal the show, but in Garouden this is taken to a even further extent because there are entire story arcs that Tanba is barely even a side-character or isn't even present, like in Tatsumi's arc or the "Fist and Twist Tournament arc" where the Wrestler Hiroshi Nagata is pretty much the main character, the main "Villain" if you even could call him that is Shozan Matsuo and he is build up to be one of the Strongest Men in the world but a fight with him never happens so he doesn't really do much aside from Organizing the Tournament.
5.5/10
Story:
Well not much to be said here since what moves the story are the fights which don't have much writing except for the Martial Arts stuff and characters reading their opponents, the best story arc by far though is Tatsumi's arc, where we actually get some clever writing and some emotional stakes it is short but it serves as a pretty good backstory for the character, the following arc is the Tournament, where Grapplers and Strikers test their skills to prove who's the strongest of them all, it is very similar to the Maximum Tournament in Baki the problem here is that the battles are extremely short, lasting for only 1 chapter, 2 if you are lucky, which is very small in comparison to the Maximum Tournament which had fights last for at least 3 chapters, most fights are extremely one-sided and predictable too, the moment the 2 fighters get revealed you can already tell who'll win, and this becomes very frustrating after nearly 100 chapters of just that, the final arc is nothing to write home about, since it never actually got a conclusion, the manga "ends" before it could do that.
6/10
The "Ending"
It seems the Garouden manga was always on and off about chapter releases since Itagaki was working on his own manga he probably couldn't keep up with it, so volume releases were basically more than a year apart from each other, so the manga kinda was in a hiatus until it was confirmed it ended and wouldn't be receiving anymore chapters, the manga basically ends on a big cliffhanger.
Overall Enjoyment
This a pretty fun Fighting Manga if you turn your brain off, it has it's problems but they aren't that big of a deal, if you like Baki or Tough you'll probably have a blast with Garouden, it also has a pretty cheap but decent 3D fighter for the Ps2 so you can enjoy some even more Garouden content.
