Mild spoilers up ahead:
I'll just start this by saying I really loved season 1 of Re:Zero, it was an incredible experience I think everyone should get to see. The stories were beautifully written and the few fights were fantastic.
I had very high expectations for Season 2, which might be what caused the heavy disappointment I felt by the end of this season.
Season 2 started off fine, but then gradually became more and more boring. The conversations drag on for so long and they cram the episodes with so much dialogue I almost thought I was watching a parody of a visual novel.
Now, Visual
...
novel-like animes are fine, some of my favourite animes are mostly dialogue.
Story: 1
The reason I didn't like this one though, is because this season is mostly lore and backstories that are very, VERY predictable and cliche. They're also not that interesting at all, failing to keep engagement. With longer episodes, one would expect more to be accomplished, but almost everything happens in a tell-don't-show manner, VERY slowly. It resolves so quickly at the end, I didn't even realize we were near the conclusion of the season. There were so many pacing issues.
Art: 4
The art was decent, re:zero artstyle is pretty nice to look at. Though one thing I disliked about this is the roswaal's mana fever scene with Echidna. The animators actually went through animating that disgusting scene that they did not need to do whatsoever. There's so many aspects of tell-don't-show in this season, and the one thing they deem necessary to show instead was that scene? Sometimes I wonder if the writers thought grossing out the audience through stuff like that is going to get a positive response, it was so unnecessary.
We like anime because it has our favourite cool scenes animated. We don't watch anime to look at slightly moving sculptures speak to each other for 30 minutes. Watch a play or something if you're interested in that.
Sound: 9
The voice actors really worked hard for this season. Subaru's voice actor deserves an award. Nice openings and endings. Kudos.
Characters: 2
As of this season, almost all of the witches have one personality trait and that's it. They felt like robots.
They are the worst example of the character writing here. Why have seven whole witches with barely one-dimensional personalities? Why so many characters that won't be used to their full extent to develop later on unless you're making an incredibly vast series?
Otto was one of my favourite characters from the series and even though he got more screentime, he unfortunately doesn't carry much plot relevance other than cheering up subaru [something that literally 4 other characters have done by now]. I feel like Otto had so much potential other than to be "the" caravan driver but that's how it kinda ended.
I liked subaru in season 1 except around episode 13, he was pretty cool. In season 2 though, he feels really generic, all the personality in him was drained out leaving hero number 143 to save beatrice and emilia and other friends.
The characters introduced have such one-note or barely two-note personalities like Garfiel at the very start of the season. Subaru also gaining powers to fight back kinda made me feel like we lost a part of what made him so good in the first place, as a strategist who had to get past his weakness using a beautiful, but tragic gift.
Enjoyment: 1
God, I was so bored watching this. I really wanted to skip a few minutes ahead so many times. They spoonfeed you literally everything and it feels like nothing really was accomplished. There's so much dialogue and everything fell flat on its face.
Barely any other anime has ever done this for me, out of hundreds of other ones.
Overall: 2
Decent artstyle and great sound design really won't save something. Though I have to give it a two since those two are its stronger points in this review. I haven't seen a show make me this sad since Promised Neverland Season 2. I felt empty and the characters were so bland. I'm really hoping season 3 can put my worries to rest and be engaging again.
I simply wouldn't recommend this second season to anyone out there unless they really want more re:zero after season 1.
My expectations were too high.
