The Melancholy of Haruhi (MH) did not begin the trend of "school club" anime, but it did accelerate the genre over the last decade. The two shows noticeably parallel one another in that both feature male leads that frequently monologue. Kyon (MH) and Hachiman (SNAFU) both provide cynical narratives and analyses of events and characters throughout their respective series. In MH the show is told from Kyon's vantage point, and while Hachiman is darker than Kyon, he has a similar tone and demeanor. MH features a broader cast with lower levels of character depth than SNAFU2, but it focuses on the activities of the characters and the club and neither show prominently features romance; there are only hints of it. The female characters in MH are equally enigmatic to those in SNAFU2 and the male leads in both shows often spend a lot of time trying to un-package their motivations. SNAFU 2 is the more dramatic cousin of MH, and if the viewer enjoyed Hachiman as a character, they will have equal sentiments for Kyon in MH.

Both shows feature male leads that are realistic (or pessimistic) narrators. While Hachiman's outlook tends to focus on the dark-side of individuals and society, Kyon in Melancholy carries only a sarcastic and cynical tone in his narration. Both leads are dropped into after-school clubs against their will, filled with interesting characters. Kyon deals with an energetic, enigmatic female lead whose antics often place its club members in trouble. Hachiman on the other hand, works with an ice-queen club leader and carries significantly less pull than Kyon. The similarities of the male leads and the environments each is placed makes these shows easy to compare, even if the themes are dramatically different.

Death note involves a journal/dairy that allows a person to kill (predict the death) of an individual. This is a psychological suspense anime as well.

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Both anime have an air of mystery, suspense, and darkness to them. Darker than Black has a more ambiguous tone with its plot and characters exposing the viewer slowly to the pieces in the puzzle. The same can be said about Death Note however the entire puzzle is revealed to the viewer and not to all the characters. However the process of piecing together what will happen next is similar to how Darker than Black unravels.

Similar Tsundere type theme anime. The plot is not nearly as heavy but the character development is just as good as Shana. The female leads are nearly identical except there is some role reveral with the males. Shana is the protector where as Louise is the protected.

The characters are very similar and both series since they are written by the same author. Each series is on the lengthy side and although there is more story in InuYasha it still follows a similar comedic and romantic pattern with Ranma 1/2
