When the Fall 2017 anime season first started, I was on the fence about picking up Mahoutsukai no Yome. It seemed like it'd be a show with wonderful animation, compelling character development, and a genuine sense of adventure, none of which appeal to me in any way. However, with the severe lack of interesting anime in this season, I ended up picking this one up because I was bored and thought "Hell, why not?" This was easily the best decision I made all year.
Mahoutsukai no Yome starts out slow, but once you get past the first few episodes, you find yourself completely immersed in its
...
extremely shallow world, bland characters that never develop, and steadily declining animation quality! Don't even get me started on the hilarious comedic relief that often directly clashes with the tone and trivializes serious issues to the point that you can't take them seriously. I was in stitches every time the characters went all chibi so they could deliver more side-splitting, witty jokes in a way that completely broke immersion for no reason.
This show is a godsend for people like me that like consistency and stability in their anime, since there isn't a single character that develops in any meaningful way. Speaking of characters, Chise is easily the best one in this show. Her role of "perpetual damsel in distress that constantly stumbles into danger and needs to be rescued and never actually does anything herself" is awesome. I never got tired of seeing some mysterious entity pop up and abduct or otherwise threaten Chise. It served as a great way of introducing a random character that would immediately be dropped afterward while also making the audience think that something with actual consequences might happen.
I think my favorite parts of the show were the bits where Chise would be captured by some evil guy at the very end of the episode, but then the situation would immediately be resolved within 5 minutes of the next episode starting with nothing serious happening whatsoever. They're the best because they basically summed up the whole show. I also liked how sometimes they would include a part where Chise gives some speech to the bad guy of the episode or the writers decide she has a cool power that counters them to make it seem like she has some sort of agency when she actually doesn't. It's quite nice how, despite her latent magical prowess being talked up throughout the entire show, she never actually gains any sort of consistent mastery over magic. Her magic powers always manifest as gigantic random asspulls that defeat her enemies when she gets mad.
The animation in Mahoutsukai no Yome is wonderful. In the first few episodes, it was a bit too smooth and detailed, leaving something to be desired, but by the end of the first cour, it developed into the endearingly stilted, slow-paced snoozefest that we all came to love. It's no wonder the production value is one of the most highly praised aspects of this show! Wit Studio has absolutely knocked it out of the park with Mahoutsukai no Yome and it stands tall next to their other smash hits like Owari no Seraph and Kabaneri in the animation department. It's not quite on the same level as Owari no Seraph though, since there isn't much that can top the "it literally looks like the characters are sliding around on gigantic paintings that don't mesh even remotely well with the characters" style it had.
There are other things worth going into more detail on in Mahoutsukai no Yome, like the delightfully disjointed episodic storytelling that seemed to meander around aimlessly for 75% of its run time without adding anything to the overarching plot or character development. There's also the awe-inspiring, forced musical scenes like the embarrassing asspull phoenix scene in episode 12 where they try to make Chise's latent power seem interesting but actually they just wanted to try to sell more copies of the OP single. However, I think I've already made my case at this point, so there's no need to continue. Mahoutsukai no Yome is the best anime of 2017 and you're flat out wrong if you disagree. The only reason I wouldn't declare it to be anime of the decade at this point is because Uma Musume: Pretty Derby is on the horizon and it's looking to be the main contender for that title.

woah this show is straight up retarded. i held out hope for so long because i just assumed that they wouldn't be able to completely squander their really cool premise.
everything about the show is super dry and straightforward, with constant, massive exposition dumps in lieu of creative storytelling. the characters (especially Meteora) are extremely bland and just sit there vomiting exposition dumps at each other the entire time, except for the few times when they try to be funny (and fail). they just plainly announce intentions, desires, and motivations with no sense of nuance as if they were just running down a checklist of plot
...
points they needed to cover. it felt like i was screaming "NO HUMAN BEING ACTUALLY TALKS LIKE THIS" out loud multiple times per episode.
all of the people on the "bad" side seemed to have very questionable motivation for being on that side. their motivations were childish at best (the gun guy) and outright braindead at worst (the knight girl). the gun guy is seriously so childish that he is incapable of just thinking for a second about the fact that the creators in the real world don't actually create media knowing that they're hurting "real" people. how about that guy that just randomly shows up in like episode 18 or 19? wasn't that great? i loved how they just randomly threw in a new character like that for no reason and then tried to pretend like the audience would care about his 30 second backstory with Selesia. his motivations were totally believable and it makes a lot of sense that he would immediately believe Altair over Selesia to the point of fighting her to the death over it. he definitely wasn't just an afterthought thrown in there so we could have an epic sacrifice!!
also, if you're gonna try to constantly throw in meta humor or jokes that poke fun at the anime industry, you should probably try being a good show first. it's simultaneously amusing and irritating to see an anime make meta jokes as it does absolutely nothing to subvert expectations and generally sucks ass all around. the recap episode in particular was dumb as fuck and made me want to stick a toothpick under my toenail and kick a wall as hard as i could.
Magane was an okay character and the only thing about this show that i genuinely liked (other than the OST) after the first two episodes or so. she even got pretty dumb as the show neared the end though, especially with that hilarious twist on episode 20 (that was preceded by an equally funny unrelated twist like 10 minutes prior).

misunderstandings and really awkward, awfully written characters! nice bait and switch with the gaming theme btw. i really appreciate how this turned into yet another terrible, cliche-ridden, flavorless romcom after like 3 episodes and completely threw away the idea of actually being about games at all. it's so ridiculously convoluted and over the top with the constant misunderstandings (that would instantly be solved by any single character actually acting like a human being) that it's actually somewhat memorable/noteworthy. noteworthy for being shitty, but still.
but seriously, why is this show called "Gamers!"? the show has almost nothing to do with games at this point, and as
...
a """"gamer"""", i can't say that any of the characters are particularly relatable. probably because they all have a deadly combination of fetal alcohol syndrome + terminal aspergers and i don't. that and i also didn't have 3 obvious girlfriend candidates and a wide social circle in high school. i also actually played videogames, rather than spending every day poorly handling relationship issues, huffing paint, and making unfunny, forced game references. wow, a character got upset and randomly blurted out the konami code! hilarious! this is the pinnacle of comedy! what's next, a character becoming so happy that they can't help but shout "THE CAKE IS A LIE!"?
any time they do actually talk about games, it makes me cringe so hard i feel like i'm going to implode. they're playing the mario kart arcade game and MC gets an item that apparently has a 50% chance of blowing up everyone around him and a 50% chance of blowing himself up. after this is explained to him, the blonde girl says "it's really hard to use on this map!" .....what? why would the map have even the tiniest bearing on how difficult it is to use? ?????????????????? nice show. totally wasn't written by a 40 year old that only plays a mobage once a week.
i feel like people get so caught up in praising this show for the MC not immediately accepting the club invite (so unique!!!!) that they're able pretend like the show didn't immediately turn into a cliche factory afterward. i turned my brain off as soon as i saw bridge scene in episode 2 or 3 where MC is vehemently defending a girl he has talked to for all of 5 minutes with a "YOU CAN SAY ANYTHING YOU WANT ABOUT ME, BUT DON'T TALK BAD ABOUT HER!" and nearly kills the guy with his retard strength. of course, the girl is secretly watching this exchange and falls madly in love with MC as a result. really breaking new ground here.
in conclusion, this show is basically just Netoge no Yome season 2 but with less games and more glue consumption. only watch it if you love misunderstandings and hate anything resembling actual human interaction.
