As a writer, there is no way I could have written this show. It is very well done, from the characters first: they all seem kind of one note at first, but the season delivers a lot in regards to their stories and gives quite a bit in character development. Each episode shows us a lesson from Sensei's stories, which usually involve him creeping around just observing and writing. Many side characters are interesting as well, and often relate directly to the overarching episodic plot.
The music is okay, but used at important times which is nice. The jokes are kind of repetitive but not
...
to the point of irritating; in fact most are relatable and can make me chuckle.
I do think (despite the overall score on MAL) that the show is one of the better ones this season and instead of totally relying on tropes (other than maybe dragon quest) it does honestly deliver some actually good writing, so I don't know what to expect and I don't have to skip boring scenes.
This summer may have been a letdown, but this was a nice surprise. The art isn't anything to write home about, but this show doesn't really need it, nor is it as bad as some other shows with unnecessary still frames everywhere.
Please, watch this!

It's not your average isekai, sure, and it's fun to watch. The wholesomeness almost gives it more of a relaxed vibe. The characters (especially the side characters) drive the fun of the story, though I'm not entirely sure what the narrative is trying to accomplish. It's rife with contrived short plots that end or start just out of some kind of convenience to the MC, so it's really hard to tell where they want to go with this. It really doesn't have the pull (or Macguffin) that other shows have but each episode is still comfy to watch.
The animation is, well...kind of suitable to
...
the work but nothing to write home about. The kids are cute and it's nice to see how they all interact, including the contracted beasts. If you're looking for a high impact thriller, this is not going to be your jam. I do also like him introducing all kinds of meals and sauces and such to people that might as well have been eating cardboard. Still, most episodes, while having enjoyable moments, fall kind of flat with the lack of tension or direction. In a way it feels almost like a slice of life anime than an isekai, not that it can't be both.
If you're looking for something more relaxed and cute this summer, I definitely recommend this title. It's not the most well written but it's still enjoyable. The art...not great; the sound...dull. However the characters are fun to see and perhaps the narrative will be fleshed out better later. This seems like a character driven show, so on that level it's done a great job. I sincerely think it's fine, but mostly forgettable, even if I want to see more.
Overall, 7/10 for me. Although that is borderline since artistically speaking it's not that great.

Another brilliant piece brought to us from the mind of Tang Jia San Shao, this donghua has it all. There are some boring parts, some that are ridiculously trite, but for the most part I found it wonderful.
Each character has their role and they know it well. Notice I didn't say that they are stereotyped, but have their roles. I really loved the library teacher, who grew along with his student. Unlike in other donghua where killing and forgetting about people all for the sake of power is normal, here we see meaningful relationships and lasting bonds.
Sacrifices are made but accolades are shared
...
and well deserved. In this, we see more about the power of relying on friends that you make instead of power you take for yourself. Not just that, but these friends are all unique and have histories that are very moving.
If you want to see more than just battles and explosions, if you want something to fill your heart with joy and sorrow, if you want to see the weak combine to defeat the strong, then this is for you.
The music isn't as good as in Douluo Dalu but it is still good and at some points you just KNOW it's goin' down. The animation is amazing, fights are generally well done, though sometimes it can be a bit fast probably due to time constraints.

It's rare for me to rate a show as low as I did this one, and dropped, but this was just God awful. Sound? The same three music effects used constantly and other than that: nothing. Art is so poorly done, the characters are all very blandly drawn and the animation is next to nothing. Battles become essentially narrated instead of just showing the darn battle.
The OP self insert MC also loves to just punish people for little to no reason, rape anything that walks, and continue to keep people prisoner. I don't know what sick bastard came up with this but it's absolutely irreedemable.
...
The characters only serve as tools and passing interests for the MC, who no doubt would kill and eat them if he thought it would help him become more powerful. Instead of a story about reincarnation as a race that is seen as inferior, that manages to go through tribulations to become stronger and establish relations with other tribes it has basically become a rape fest and all that happens in between is just setup for more rape. Why was this ever greenlit?

One of the most boring shows I've ever had the misfortune of seeing. It could have been a lot better but at this point it put me to sleep more than Mr. Roger's Neighborhood when I was a child. A lot of promise but it quickly becomes one-note. Repetitive, slow, boring, and die cast characters that show absolutely zero growth.
Dear God, don't get me started on the "music" and sound. The few times they tried to use sound to build tension were totally lost on me, because there never seemed to be anything really at stake. It's serialized slice of yokai with characters fitting neatly
...
into their predetermined tropes with no room to move or grow. The voice acting was really good but the rest of the sound department was asleep at the wheel, and after hearing the OP, so was I.
The art is fine, especially for its era, my biggest complaint being how there seems to be a layer of fog over every scene. It just looks...dusty. The only good characters in the show are unironically the Yokai of the Week one and done characters. It's too bad we didn't get to see more of them and less of MC and the "cat".
If exciting anime is like a trip down some river rapids, then this is a safe and slow float in a blow up ring at a public pool, but no one else is there because they all got bored and went home to take their metamucil and go to bed early. Really disappointing because the show DID have its moments but the vast majority of the time spent was rehashed one-liners and excessively slow-walked episodes that seemed to be of no actual consequence because the week after it would be totally forgotten about.
In the end what are we left with? An overarching goal, outcome, message?
"humans and yokai CAN get along guys!"
How inspiring, I've fired up to do a marathon of watching paint dry now and doing some crappy post modern armchair philosophy over it.

Weird take on CGDCT, Kaiju Girls' main premise is precisely that: girls (chibi) that can transform into anthropomorphized Kaiju, the girls are basically students and have peculiar personalities, which depending on your tastes can either be grating or comedic. I personally liked it a lot.
Each episode is about 5 minutes long, just a bunch of shorts with intermittent punchlines. If you go into this looking for anything other than a cheap chuckle then prepare to be disappointed. For me, I can't sit through more than a few episodes at a time but if you take it for what it is (bite sized humor) rather
...
than a protracted narrative it can be enjoyable.
Not much to talk about in art and sound but the characters, while relatively one-dimensional, interact in amusing ways.
Overall 7/10

This show has become a problem that many writers face when they create a world that they want to be deep but find themselves drowning in it. There are too many characters and ALL OF THEM for some reason need 8 trillion hours of back story, so the actual show never fucking goes anywhere. You can take all of this season and compile it into 30 minutes if you cut all the bullshit flashbacks, still shots, and all the other crap. I'm more than pissed off; this is a disgrace to anime; no, to storytelling in general.
audio? reptetive and even at that nothing great
art/animation?
...
wildly inconclusive. there are times when it's great, even if disturbing at times, and other times it's terrible. still frames, wonky action, but sometimes it's good. totally inconsistent.
story: dude like i said, all of this can have been done in one episode, or a movie, not every of the 500 characters needs 30 episodes of flashbacks. as of this moment the show is total garbage.
characters: like i said there's a million of them and i can't give a damn about each and every middle school thug just cuz their life sucked. i mean how many times do we have to hear the same damn sob story but oh it's okay now for him to beat a kid half to death? tired of it.

even in fiction, you can't have a whole island of people all equally stupid. i mean, legends of stupidity kind of stupid. the kind where someone has to remind you to breathe and tie your shoes for you well into your 40s. how can there be suspense and intrigue when everyone is dumb as a box of rocks? none of it makes sense and it is sloppy writing. tragic since it was a cool premise.
so nobody was going missing until a new girl comes in, then suddenly they are all missing or dying in quick succession but no one bats an eye. said girl becomes
...
class leader but spends her time following people around instead of leading at all. said girl also has no friends or contacts except for the people she follows around that all subsequently end up dead or missing. additionally she seems to be the only one to have been at every single crime scene around the time it happens. also she seems to be skittish and consistently makes "requests" of the others and excuses but somehow they still think she has an air of niceness and innocence, despite never hanging out with her or knowing a single detail of her life. on top of that the teacher(s?) don't do anything and are rarely seen. hell i don't even know where administration is.
what started off as a cool premise quickly got spun into a mystery but it seems like the creator has never actually read mystery before. it feels hamfisted because everything is quickly contrived ex post facto as if the creator set up a death and then came up with a convenient explanation AFTER the fact, which comes off as lazy and unrewarding. in the end the villain gets away with each incident through the power of stupidity. is everyone on this island on some feel-good drugs or something? they keep on in total bliss while everyone around them dies and then when some OBVIOUS excuse or lie comes from the same culprit every time they are like, "oh that makes sense".
The art is good enough, nothing to write home about but it does the job. same for the music. the premise is pretty neat, albeit shoddily presented and leaves you scratching your head. the last couple of episodes were pretty good, but i don't think it makes up for the bulk of the show and the horrid writing. i'm still intrigued by this weird shadow group and i'd probably watch a second season just to wrap up that aspect, but i'd go into it with lower expectations
in short, decent concept, poor characterization, poor execution, and a really confusing background in regards to the world they live in. some will like it, but i spent most of the show hating it, albeit with a tinge of intrigue. if it had been written better, more like a danganronpa with at least somewhat intelligent characters i think it would have been great.

So coming into this series it was really shocking as I had not been initiated into Chinese donghua before. The animation and language difference can be jarring at first, but it grew on me from mild interest into full blown fanatic of the series. The way that the characters come together can be unexpected and beautiful, and the way we get to watch them all grow from young age into adults and the trials they go through I found to be really emotionally deep. The pacing of the show can be quite jarring as sometimes it really rushes through at breakneck speed, episodes vary in
...
length and can end almost abruptly so i would have to give a word of caution in these regards but you will certainly be rewarded if you can be patient. Now that we've "finished" it might be easier for people to get into by binging rather than waiting weekly.
At first this might come off as another isekai but you will quickly see that it plays only a very small role in the show, albeit when it does come up it is important like Tang San's "inventions" and wisdom he shares from his previous life. Mostly it is a mixture of coming of age, the nature of family and friendships, love, and how does one gain power and what even is it? One thing I love is that they raise their abilities through "cultivation", a process like meditation which is also linked with how they get spirit rings from other powerful beings and they have to give respect to these beings to integrate them and utilize their skills. Lol it's not like they just do one handed pushups in artificial gravity like some saiyans I know of.
I'm still not totally sure how Gods work in this show, so I started to get a bit confused near the end and felt it was a bit rushed, even as the episodes got longer, and some of the power ups might get people a bit fatigued by power creep but it certainly is epic. I think this is definitely a show not to take too seriously, be patient, and you will find yourself drawn in by the characters, especially my favorite Tang Hao (the dad) and also the old poison guy he was a good dude. Anyways, I hope you give it a shot and also thus far the community may be small but everyone seems super cool.

This entire season has gone straight into the toilet. literally nothing happens and instead we are inundated with garbage filler. maybe it gets better after 8 whole episodes, which is long enough to almost make 2 movies, but i doubt it. the current arc is so unforgivably terrible that after two whole months only one day has passed. I originally liked this series even if it was campy at times but this is just unforgivable. this arc should have ended after 8 episodes, most arcs end in 4 to 6 but no, it's been 8 and nothing at all of any real consequence has occurred.
...
i am appalled at this stunning lack of direction. this entire season will be a stain on the show forever and i assume many will drop it and never watch it again no matter how good it gets. after this extraordinary disaster i hope someone gets fired and i would not be surprised if the series is completely dropped and no studio will pick it up.
Now, after having finished the season, an entire 21 episodes almost all of which were kids spending 3 days rooting about in the wilderness (but without the fun of Lord of the Flies) the only consequence of the entire show was that some of them ranked up. Oh and I guess one more person found out that Iruma is a human. I mean HONESTLY holy cow entire shows have managed to end in 12 to 16 episodes but we spent 21 doing NOTHING. This is One Piece levels of wasting time.
That's not to say there weren't parts that were enjoyable, it's just that it goes on for so long without anything happening. Add to that plot contrived setbacks and you have a show that spent 18 episodes on two kids trying to bloom a flower. I mean really, that's it.
