I must say that this anime has really piqued my interest. It has a good logic and foundation. People are stuck in a void between life and death, and their memories are erased; they need to find out if they are dead or alive. As they recover their memories, they remember who they really are. This concept can actually be made very meaningful, and by focusing on the identity conflict of each character, the genres of drama, mystery, and psychology can be easily conveyed. However, the anime does not seem very promising in achieving this.
I heard that this anime is adapted from a game, and
...
the game is generally well-liked. It's clear that the original story is strong, but in terms of the anime, it fails to convey this.
What I particularly want to criticize is the handling of the mystery genre. While the clients are recovering their memories, our main character helps them, but it seems as if they suddenly find out who they are without any logical clues or thought process. Let me take the last episode I watched, episode 3, as an example: the main character said that the man who introduced himself as a detective was guilty, but there was not enough evidence. He only guessed based on photos and the assumption that the detective card was fake. This is a guess, not evidence. Then he claimed that the man had studied medicine, not detective work. How did he know this? The detective suddenly took one of the servants hostage; this is quite cliché. He didn't even bother to deny it or claim that the evidence was insufficient. While helping other clients, despite just adapting to the environment, he solves everything without clues in a "you were actually like this" manner. There are no clues offered to the audience, and the main character has no realistic reason to think this way.
Putting aside the mystery, the supporting characters are interesting for now; they could deepen in the future. However, the main character's sudden love for one of the workers, without any reason, feels silly and cliché.
In terms of animation, the series has stiff animations, but it’s not too bad. The drawings are simple and decent enough, but sometimes the animation falls short in creating the atmosphere.
Despite everything, I think this series is definitely worth giving a chance this season. Although it has problems, the main story is progressing well, and each episode offers more explanation and detail. I just wish it had been presented more professionally; then it could have been truly great. Still, it is worth following!
