I once woke up in a pool of vomit and tears after going on a 3 day bender of nothing but double stuffed oreo cookies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So believe me when I tell you, this anime has the makings of what one might describe as being half way decent. Lets be honest, most anime is hardly above a 6 on the MAL rating scale . . . unfortunately the anime community is infused with fan girls who drool over emo MC's and guys who sleep with sailor moon body pillows. Do I really need to make a case for watching a group of semi-grown men swim? Fine, I'll play. This show makes me want to kick off my shoes and drink a 12 pack of Big Wave on my back porch. I have spent more time dropping a deuce while watching anime than most of you have been alive. That being said, Im not some anime elitist that's stuck in 1995 preaching how OP Legend of Galactic Heroes is. If you look hard enough you can find something enjoyable in just about anything. This show is the Gold Standard for Space Westerns. I dare you not to like this show. This show has passion, heart, story telling, ambiance, and a fkn Corgi. I felt inclined to write this review because so many of you reading this were probably born in the 90s, and really have no decent appreciation of how awesome 80's and 90 anime truly was. Now listen, I get it, the art style may not be packed full of lens flares and sharp lines that you modern otaku go crazy for, but each frame is bursting with detail. As I sit here sipping peppermint tea, the cold bitter breath of winter clawing at my window like grey wolf shrouded in steam, I find myself satisfied with finishing an anime that simply does not stand up to my high standards of what a 'good' anime should be.

This anime can by no means be considered a 'good' anime. Its full of tropes, gimmicky characters, predictable plot directions, and questionable directorial decisions. All that being said, it was mildly enjoyable . . . and I think you should watch it.
I enjoyed the ruthless nature of the Vampires, and how they seemed to be so overwhelmingly more powerful than humans. I really wish they would have explored that route more. Instead, they used an anime loophole (humans find some weapons that can be possessed by demons to give them super powers) in order to level the playing field. I ... |
