There is no Major Spoiler in this review, tho I refer to some scenes, names, and events for the sake of comparison between the (Anime and Manga).
----------------Plot-----------------
I have to say this is one of the most realistic movie ever, It deals with serious issues and conclude easy solutions for each situations. and the fact you can't expect what is going to happen next will make you appreciate each minute you spend watching this.
As a fan of the original manga which I read a few weeks ago and loved it to it's core, all I can say is the movie stays true to
...
the source as close as possible, there are little details altered which most won't even notice. It's still great for those who are not planning to read the manga anytime soon.
But for those who might want to read the manga too, There are some differences I want to point out.
First, there are at least a few chapters left out and one major event (the Theater) completely ignored even tho it was the part a few side characters get development, Mashiba, for instance.
(you can see a HOLLYWOOD text appearing on Nagatsuka's clothing which hints that event).
Next, back-story of Nishimiya's Family is another major plot device missing in the movie which is somewhat related to why Shoko makes up her decision in the second part of the movie.
and Lastly, lots of dialogues and self-talk were left out which made me a bit disappointed while watching the movie, Ishida for instance is the one who gets most of his self-talk (dialogues with himself) ignored and changed that with silent moments with eye stares and quiet scenes which turned out really good. That is to be expected as it would need +1 hour run time to fit everything from the manga. could only be done if it was a 12-episode anime instead of a movie.
So If you are like me and enjoy heavy mind-talking. you will enjoy the manga more and get to understand what is going on in his mind.
I don't want to go into further detailed comparison. but There is this scene where Nishimiya says I can't hear. in the anime, it shows Ishida's eye opening wider than usual to reflect the tense situation, in the Manga there is a full two page drawing which much better takes your attention and make your eye even wider than Ishida's.
--------Production------------------
Art: it's truly a piece of Art, no complain , no issues I could find. character's design were true to the manga, the detailed water scenes and lovely backgrounds, Outstanding overall.
Sound: The sound doesn't stand out except for the really good theme song at the end, but the effects along with the ambient sounds made a comfortable watch.
Voice Acting was really good, each character got the voice reflecting their behavior's. so over all it get 9 out of 10.
--------Final thought---------------
I enjoyed watching the movie for sure, even more the 2nd time watching it. never felt bored for a second. if not for some little confusing scenes it would get a perfect score.
I totally recommend the story and you can't go wrong with any of them, the awesome colorful anime or the more detailed, more emotional manga.
