BRAVO! JUST FKN WOW!
Beautiful story and alluring character development/relationships which span a lifetime! Captivating world building/lore! This is absolutely a masterclass in story telling. ALL characters are well developed, perfectly placed in the story and have a purpose/role in the story's development.
The animation and direction is magnificently done!
- Camera angles are immensely dynamic
- Details in the animation background/emotional scenes (ex: Perched birds flying off as the camera pans while showing Dead End
party travelling. Rudy breaking bread in the tavern)
- Music is ideally matched with the panoramic views of the background landscape. It sets the tone nicely in
...
enhancing the viewers'
experience for different setting.
And, the screenplay adaptation from the light novel (Volumes 1-6) is skillfully done! (Adapting the LN chapters' progression as it was written would not have translated well on screen. Instead, the anime screenwriters chose a different path of progression which exceeds in depicting the story much better than the LN (ex: the setup for Eris' and Rudy's kidnapping) Also, some details were changed from the LN that worked much better than the original LN content. Overall, for me, the season 1 anime was actually more enjoyable vs reading the LN volumes 1-6.
However, one very important aspect from the LN was poorly captured in the anime... Rudy's work ethic. The screenplay made it seem as though Rudy became a powerful mage just because he was a prodigy. I mean, yeah, Rudy was born with a talent for magic via having practically limitless mana. But, on top of that, the guy seriously put in the work on the daily, through practice and repetition. Rudy's power aquisition emerged from not only talent, but through hard work, discipline and effort as well. Like the saying with pro athletes, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesnt work hard." The LN continuously mentions his determination to not waste his second chance at life by incorporating magic/sword play/strength training practice into his daily routine to minimize his weaknesses. Compared to Eris, Rudy's talent for swordplay was lacking. But he was still able to beat Luke in a duel quite easily (3 seconds) without using magic. His ability to win that duel stemmed from his daily strength training and swordplay pratice. Not to mention, sparring with Eris/Ruijerd. Like Bruce Lee said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
I urge you to read the light novel in sync with each season/episode, you will find yourself more enthralled with this incredible masterpiece!
Although season 2 was still good, it was a bit of a disappointment in the art quality/animation/direction/music compared to season 1. But, I read somewhere that the screenwriters/animators/director who worked on season 1 have planned on returning to work on season 3. If that's true, then we are definitely in for a treat! Hopefully they stay to work on the project until the end. Because, Ive already read the entire LN and the story only gets better from volume 13 til the end. Man, what a ride!
