Preliminary (27/51 eps)
At the risk of spouting hyperbole, I'm of the opinion that Glass Mask is easily one of the best anime dramas, if not THE best to come down the pike in the last twenty years. The story of ordinary girl Maya Kitajima and her dream of becoming an actress hooked me from the first episode, and the incredible trials and tribulations, successes and failures she endured to realize her dream is nothing less than remarkable. Watching Maya grow and blossom into an actress, tapping into a hidden wellspring of tremendous talent is amazing, and when her eyes glaze over and she "puts on a mask", ...

Preliminary (1/13 eps)
Maybe I'm too easily pleased when it comes to anime and I'm nowhere near as critical as others, but hey, I liked Rio: Rainbow Gate. I found the concept of a show based in a casino to have been different, oh, sure, I'll admit there's nothing particularly deep or meaningful about this show, and that it's attractive star presents a fair amount of fanservice to viewers, still, I thought it was delightfully goofy, silly and innocent fun, and isn't fun an important part of the anime watching experience? I enjoyed the light, wacky, slightly racy nature of this show which clearly doesn't take itself seriously, ...

AIKa (Anime) add
I make no bones about Agent Aika being my all-time favorite anime guilty pleasure and how much I just plain LOVE this show. Beyond the paper-thin rip-off of the plot from Moonraker, this show is all about hot looking, long legged girls in ridiculously short skirts and high heels for as far as the eye can see, not to mention the almost endless number of panty shots and the imaginative camera angles used to display same (Just for fun, I actually tried counting all the panty shots during one viewing and lost count after around 250!). To call Aika outrageous would be an understatement, this ...

As great as the first season of MariMite was, I thought the second season was even better, and that said a lot, considering how I called the first season of the show the best anime I had watched in 2008. The drama quotent of the second season was, as Emeril Lagasse is fond of saying, kicked up a few notches: from the graduation of the Roses; the relevation of Shimako and her relationship with Noriko; the introduction of Toko who rubbed me the wrong way from jump street to the heart tugging emotional struggles of Yumi who feared Sachiko was growing distant from her. All, ...

As a rare duck around here, a soon to be 50 year old male who enjoys slice of life anime, I found Maria-sama ga Miteru to have been absolutely charming and delightful, and easily the best series I've watched in all of 2008. The calm, serene, languid pace of the series and its setting at an all-girl's Catholic school made it easy to relax with, but it's the wealth of the show's characters, each with their own distinct and unique personality increased my overall enjoyment and is the highlight of the show. As you watch the show, you can't help becoming involved in the lives ...
