Reasons for Thorfinn's hatred.

or rather, the reason why his hatred is a CRUCIAL part of his character development

PRE- SEASON 2 THOUGHTS

OBVIOUS STATEMENTS AND THEN EXPLAINED AND DELVED INTO:

... Thorfinn's original hatred for Askeladd is because of his father's death, which was caused by Askeladd.

as a child thorfinn relied so much on his father, and he never tried to imagine a world without him.

he looked up to his father so much that it almost became his entire reason for living.

thorfinn never thought he would have to live without his father, therefore when that time came he didn't know what to
do.

it was as if his reason for living had now been erased, and he no longer knew what to do with himself.

therefore he used his hatred towards askeladd as a way to keep himself fuelled and to give himself an excuse to carry on
going, because he couldn't think of another reason to
live other than being his father's son (which is no longer possible).


>>> Thorfinn's character development is not actually him becoming a stronger fighter and warrior, but actually becoming a
deeper human who can understand the values and importance of life, and one who has a new reason for living, as well as
appreciating and making the most of the life he has been given.

most people don't realize what the story is actually about - it is NOT a revenge story, but rather one about forgiveness and
learning to move on from past wounds.

OTHER THINGS I HAVE NOTICED

The name Thorfinn is a Scandinavian name that comes from the Old Norse name Þórfinnr. It is made up of the words Þór, which
means "thunder", and finnr, which means "a Finn" or "a Lapp". The name is thought to mean "thunder of/to the Finns".

The name Askeladd is a Dano-Norwegian form of the name Oske-ladd, which is made up of the words oske meaning "ash" and
ladd meaning "hair sock".

>> Oske-ladd may have come from the idea that ashes clinging to feet look like furry socks. Another theory is that the second
part of the name is related to the word lodden, which means "blow gently". This could be a reference to the name Askefis,
which refers to SOMEONE WHO BLOWS ON EMBERS TO MAKE A FIRE BURN BRIGHTER.



>> Another thing that most people don't realize is that Askeladd is NOT Thorfinn's rival, even though Thorfinn himself seems to think so.

>> Askeladd is the reason Thorfinn has such good character development, as Askeladd is the one who BLOWS ON THE EMBERS TO MAKE THE FIRE BURN BRIGHTER.

>> Explanation: Through Askeladd's teasing etc., Thorfinn's hatred grows stronger and stronger. However, Thorfinn lose every battle against Askeladd.
Slowly but surely, through these fights Askeladd is teaching Thorfinn that life is not just about revenge and killing your enemies, but rather that there is
more to life and one needs to let go of the past in order to fully realize and experience what life and this world has to offer.

>> In other words, Askeladd causes Thorfinn to BURN BRIGHTER by slowly kindling and tending to the embers, that is, Thorfinn's heart.
