You can think of it taking place in similar universe since it uses the same sci fi plot device of a tightly controlled satellite colony to keep the human population going from the aftermath of a natural disaster. Also both focus on the culture clash between the blonde (scantily clad) military trained special forces agent and bonding experience with the local guy that has memories / nostalgia of the normal surface world with morals the viewer empathizes with. Expelled from Paradise, 2 hour movie but it is a good showcase of some of the best CGI graphics out currently. Simple story but light hearted and has some good fluid motion action scenes of mechas that would expect to see from Suisei no Garagantia. A good pick me up after watching Blue Gender's tragedies. Blue Gender : 2cour anime that is on the opposite spectrum of Expelled from Paradise in terms of comedy / tragedy spectrum, but is a solid story and has a full bonding relationship people long for in Expelled from Paradise. The plot gaps in Expelled from Paradise, how they got off the planet and why they chose the virtual world are explained on in Blue Gender as central plot points, and Expelled from Paradise can be a good what if for the same policies to take place 100 years in the future.

Both have light novel source materials and focus on a cool MC hiding his untold back story and past experience from the rest of the militaristic high school and slowly showing it off as he gets into more fights surrounding a mixture of hand to hand combat, specialized weapons, and magic / kai. Also both have an interesting support cast to make up for the withdrawn personality of the MC.
