Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

At first glance Madoka Magica and FMA:B seem totally different. One is a shounen show, the other a mahou shoujo show. However when you look past superficial differences the two have quite a bit in common. Both have dark engaging story lines with plenty of foreshadowing and shocking twists. Both have characters who struggle and fight against the terrible things that happened to them and refuse to give up hope. And both involve magic that has a price.

Princess Tutu and Madoka Magica on the surface appear to be very typical magical girl shows, with cutsey art and a simplistic story. However both subvert the watchers expectations with a darker take on the genre and compelling and well thought out stories and characters. They also have similar themes about selfishness verses selflessness and the nature of hope.
