Ao no Orchestra
|
Both anime are centered around teenagers playing classical music. The MCs of both shows (Kousei Arima and Hajime Aono) have stopped performing music only to get back into it again. The dynamics between the male and female leads are also somewhat similar. The main difference between the two shows is that while Your Lie in April lays more into humor, Ao no Orchestra is a little more grounded and mainly features competitive aspects which are more typical of the average shounen. That said, both have their fair share of dramatic moments and sad backstories.

Sakamoto Days

Both of these series follow men who made their money on murder now living pretty ordinary lives. They have pretty like senses of humor. The big difference is that Gokushufudou is a bit on the silly side, not taking itself very seriously; while Sakamoto Days is still very humorous, it has a lot more serious moments and imagery. Sakamoto Days is also not "episodic" like Gokushufudou is.

Both Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai combine the art of samurai with Western (namely hip-hop) elements in their own ways. They also pair interesting stories of their main characters' pasts with unadulterated, violent fun.

Besides sharing a director and a voice actor, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo have a few interesting similarities. For starters, the main cast of characters would like to think they don't have conventional friendly love for each other, but in reality, they do, and they don't like seeing each other in trouble. The dynamics between the characters in both shows really make them special. Also, there are occasional diversions into each of the main characters' past life events in both shows. Finally, both series take genres that don't normally mix and combine them uniquely - Cowboy Bebop does it with sci-fi and noir, while Samurai Champloo does it with samurai and hip-hop.

Great Pretender
|
While Great Pretender is not as raw as Black Lagoon, both shows have noticeable commonalities. To start, both of them are based around "missions", if you will, carried out by a group of mercenaries. There are also great similarities between main characters. Great Pretender's lead Makoto Edamura is a bit like Rock - they're both uninitiated guys thrown into big business situations they're not prepared for, and they never lose their hearts no matter what happens. Meanwhile, Great Pretender's main female character Abigail Jones is just a much calmer version of Revy; however, both of them are particularly violent and aggressive - especially to their respective main characters, even though deep down they care for them. Lastly, both shows feel particularly Western and not so much like anime, which makes them easy to watch even for people who haven't seen or aren't into anime.
