i'm guessing asano read alien 9 and liked the premise of japan having to deal w some alien invasion. he must have also liked the idea of adding school girls to a sort of but not quite really invasion story. which is fine, really. but alien 9 does better and much faster. the art similarly cute, yet peculiar. but that comes with the territory

What do you get when you combine a colorful cast of characters, unapologetic yet never vulgar fan service, super power out the wazoo and true friendship? - it should be noted that both shows make use of fanservice, however it is limited and never becomes obnoxious or unpleasant - the story revolves around a group of friends with unique personalities - well directed and fast paced action full of energy and spirit - dynamic character interactions and good chemistry - quirky super powers - atypical endings - entertaining, touching and easily watchable - underrated and often overlooked - emphasis on friendship without it ever becoming too "in your face" and without making the "power of friendship" a plot device - often misinterpreted or misunderstood - good balance of raunchy comedy, character drama and energetic action - interesting and cute character designs - did i mention they have a penchant for nice lingerie?

While probably not the most obvious recommendation, Diebuster holds many similarities to FF. - fantastic use of animation, especially during battles - wonderfully charming and fun female characters that never cross the line into being obnoxious and retain their charm all throughout the series - beautifully imagined worlds full of life, characters, fascinating world-building and awesome backrounds - fully fleshed out characters with motivations, weakness, strengths and growth - energetic, yet concise and clear storytelling - coming of age story - themes of overcoming one's flaws, weaknesses (as one might perceive them), evolution and growth, escalation and friendship - dark undertones that never become too much to unbalance the overall story and pacing - great pacing - fun to watch - they both have a "screw you" attitude that can be interpreted in more ways than one and very rock'n roll spirit - both are unique and very fascinating takes on their own genres

Original and unique urban fantasies that are often overlooked and underappareciated with a wonderful and colorful cast of characters, soulful energy and balance between character dynamics & development and fast paced action - a group of very interesting and peculiar characters that are more than simple quirks - powerful and intriguing character dynamics and drama - well directed action scenes - a balanced pacing that transitions perfectly between moments of comedy, drama, action and fantasy - unique and fascinating takes on japanese mythology with great world building and detailing - both journeys are satisfying with every step taken - beautiful animation, cute and unique character designs, fabulous art and backrounds - fantastic balance of fantasy and realism - powerful themes of family and friendship - both often overlooked and underrated - use of magic and legendary powers - japanese folklore - youkai are integral part of both stories with interesting takes on them - definitely worth your time

What happens with take a certain trope and use it in a way that subverts expectations with the risk of your creation being misinterpreted as a something else? - while not deconstructions, both shows play with the idea of fan service in interesting and original ways, integrating them perfectly into the universe they create, without it ever seeming out of place or gratuitous - furthermore, the use of said fan service is neaty explained and justified throughout the series and makes sense within their own respective universes - colorful cast of characters that have good chemistry together - well directed and animated action - you could say that that Punchline is to a ecchi shounen what Kill La Kill is to battle shounen, probably the best and most original thing to come out of their own specific genre - both run the risk at being taken at face value, therefore both tend to be disconsidered as being good - created by well acclaimed studios (MAPPA and Trigger, respectively) - both protagonists find themselves stuck in a situation that is more than meets the eye, gradually uncovering a plot to destroy the world full of twists and turns - many characters are not what they first seem - quirky and colorful character designs that stand out and fit within their own respective worlds - funny animal side characters - hacking genius characters - fun and fast paced, well directed and entertaining, with meaning behind the apparent stories

What happens when a show gets much undeserved hate, even though it pulls no punches in presenting a unique, colorful story? - well, it gets a pretty low rating (according to MAL standards), even though the story themselves subtlely subvert expectations of certain tropes - non-linear storytelling that makes perfect sense once the show is complete - colorful and interesting characters - well animated and directed action - masked superoes (some quite silly if not for the right setting that the shows portray) fight to save the world from disaster - both produced by acclaimed studios (MAPPA and Bones, respectively) - the "3 episode rule" cannot be applied to them - contain some twists and surprises throughout the course of the story - both feature idealist main characters who want to save the world and do the right thing for everybody - both protagonists are more than they seem - both shows feature time travel - with the risk of repeating myself, these are both underrated and overlooked anime, that do not deserve the hate and disrespect they get - if you look passed the appearances and not they take at face value, there is a lot to be discovered and appreciated about them both

Imaishi is an artist and not giving a single F is his art. - atypical art style for an anime, which will turn some off, that works perfectly not only in their own particular world, but enables the characters to be moved freely and absurdly for the best comedic effect - wonderfully directed dubs, packed with a lot of vulgarity, humor and great acting - an incredible sense of urgency that keeps you on your toes at all times - comically absurd premises - great entertainment for fans of raunchy animation such as south park, drawn together etc. - both directed by the precious Imaishi - both influenced by other works that are dear to him (for example, Dead Leaves is heavily influenced by the OVA Birth, while Panty & Stocking is influenced by Re: Cutie Honey and over the top western animation) - speaking of over the top, these animations are INSANE! - great comedic timing - female characters that both do not give one single screw and are also badasses in their own right - great animation and directing during fight scenes - VIOLENCE - nudity

Have you ever watched something so raunchy and absurd, that it made you laugh out loud from the bottom of your histerical heart? - comically absurd premises - exaggerated characters that poke fun at various stereotypes and tropes - nudity - vulgarity out the wazoo - fast-paced energetic storytelling - VIOLENCE - superpowers that might or might not actually make much sense - insane female leads with a black belt in badassery and comical lines - absurdist comedy at its greatest - balls of steel - a great laugh and a fun time under the condition that you are not easily offended - both funnier than nichijou

Birth

Before Hiroyuki Imaishi's insanely entertaining Dead Leaves, the world of anime delivers Birth two decades earlier. Just like Gurren Lagann was inspired by the likes of Getter Robo Armageddon, Dead Leaves takes at least some inspiration from the more modest Birth. Featuring impressive directorial choices and cuts, good animation (for the the mid '80's), fast-paced action and a cast of mad, yet colourful characters, This 1h19min OVA film is bound to leave some people wanting more and some wishing they'd get back the time they wasted. Sames as with its spiritual successor, the story is nonesensical, the plot almost non-existent and focus is put on animation, action, violence and well, FUN! Both are extremely underrated gems in the experimental side of anime, mostly because of their aesthetics and overall quirkiness, however if you're in any way passionate about various different takes on the medium, experimentation, OVA's or short animated films, recreational use of visual drugs or trope-defying instalments, then these two are certainly for you. Oh, and did I mention the wonderful comedic timing that these two have? It's like watching Looney Tunes on acid.
