Kandagawa Jet Girls is an anime with an interesting premise, but completely fell flat in terms of execution, the end result is a cliche-filled show without a strong identity. There could have been two appeals to this anime, firstly it could have had intense sports rivalry or relationship drama that intensify the matches or it could have had the appeal of being a relaxing cute comedy show.
The premise of the anime is based on a fictional water sport, jet racing. The sport itself had interesting rules of being a 2 ppl team. Instead of typical 1 racer only, you would have a driver and
...
a shooter that can shoot bullets to slow the opponent down, and the fact that jets can be optimized to fit the style of the driver/shooter.
The concept was interesting to me, and I kept on watching, hoping that the next episode would get better, and it didn't.
The matches didn't felt intense. This was because there were very little stakes in most matches and "rival "characters were just generic archetypes without any additional identities except mostly being cheerful and happy. The characters has so much time doing non-jet racing related activities, that it is difficult to take the matches seriously. For a 12 episodes anime, there were quite a few that felt like fillers where they are just relaxing and doing non-jet racing related things. Relationship dramas felt 2-dimensional, as if it is written with a generic end goal in mind of for example, "let's be a better person" rather than putting the necessary thoughts into how to actually make the show interesting to watch.
The races felt like a repeat of the ones before rather than each match being unique. Either one of interesting drama or distinguishable character abilities could have made each race feel less repetitive but the show had too little of them. By the time I was watching the last race, I was just sinking on my bed wishing it to be over soon because result was obvious and there was nothing to be excited about.
Jet Girls was not a good CGCDT comedy either, it relied too much on cliches and character archetypes instead of creating any actually interesting scenarios. The jokes were way too predictable since they either focus on the "one" trait the characters have over and over again or based on "cliches" that never becomes anything more than generic due to scenarios never having any creative spark (typical anime bath / beach scenes for example). To fill in the downtime, every episodes have to have at least a few shots either showing the girl's naked body or how big their boob is, but there is no any actual sex appeal to it and it is confusing what they are trying to achieve with it.
The most interesting character in the show to me by far is a Kiriko Yoshitoku, a Jet Race geek who loves reading about jets that barely had any screen time. She is laid back, chill, cute, doesn't speak in weird hyper energetic way every phrase, and a "normal" look that stands out among all the "glamour" from every other side characters. She didn't do much, that other characters were just too bland in comparison.
For a show that claims its sports to be "the world's most intense aquatic sport"... It wasn't. It actually take serious skill to write an anime with this concept and end up making it this boring. The only surprise I felt was me repeatedly imagining myself talking to the crews behind this anime "you are not going to execute a 12 episodes anime this way... aren't you?" And then they did, in a way that was worse than I expected, all the way until the last episode.

(THIS REVIEW CONTAIN SPOILERS) - No spoiler until the Story Section
This gambling anime is one of the most beloved anime for many critics on this site, because of its unique concept and engaging story. The focus of the anime was the Psychological part of the game and provide a Thrilling experience for the viewers. The Games on the other hand engages a wider audience with its simple rules, but the simplicity is also exactly why it turned out to be the most disappointing anime I have watched. But before I talk about the games in this anime, I will talk about...
Characters: Itou Kaiji, the MC.
...
A typical loser. He does nothing productive as he drinks all day, and he hates his own life. Until one day he has to pay a huge debt. But instead he chose to join an underground gambling tournament for a chance to win big and bring life into his emptiness. Unlike other GAME anime MCs who are overpowered, Itou Kaiji is rather balanced. He at times cracks under pressure and at time embrace it. So watching him play is very entertaining because it is hard to know what will happen next.
The other "gamers" showcases how their motives change depending on the situation, and they contributes well to the psychological parts of the game. They were keys at changing Kaiji as a person, as he learns more from them throughout the series.
The villain Hyoudou, is a sadist who spouts nonsensical philosophy. When talking about philosophy, in my opinion it should be somewhat realistic, which is not the case here. Also he was supposed to be portrayed as a mastermind, but instead he is portrayed as a one trick pony. So he is a miss.
Police? They never showed up in this anime... But I guess an anime shouldn't be taken too seriously.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story:
As I said before, all the games had very simple rules. But arc 1 was well done because there were still strategies in the game itself. In the 2nd half it went downhill, and it is hard to talk about why I was not impressed without dissecting one of the games played.
So here comes the spoiler: One of the games played in the anime was Slave vs. King. It is a two player game where there are 10 cards in total. Player A and B take turns to change their role of Slave and King. If the player is a Slave, the player gets four citizen cards and a Slave. If the player is a King, the player gets four citizen cards and a King.
King > Citizen > Slave > King. Both players place one card face down until they agree to reveal it. If Citizen and Citizen, it is a draw and the game continues. If King and Citizen, the King wins and game ends. If Slave and King, the Slave wins and game ends.
It makes no differences between a blind man and a normal person playing this game. Either way 80% win for King and 20% win for Slave. So if anyone ever analyzes how they were able to beat someone in this game, it is crap. There is no strategy in this game, and any explanation for how they won this game could work.
The plot twists were well placed, and it was a breath taking experience for me, except the last four episodes. The game played in the last four episodes was too simple and everything Kaiji said were obvious and unimpressive.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Art & Sound:
The art style fit well with the theme because the overall tone is dark and depressing. I am not an expert on art style but hey, it is produced by Madhouse. The voice acting was well done, especially the narrator, he hypes up every moment in the anime! The tone for OP was upbeat and the ED was depressing, I did not like it but that is just my music taste.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Personal enjoyment:
Itou Kaiji was entertaining and the most frustrating character to watch, everyone is flawed but his mistakes were too silly, and I dislike people who make dumb decisions (Myself included). First half still had a lot of surprising and memorable moments and then second half happened. Much of the disappointment were my own fault, because I had way too high of expectations. But as much as I disliked the show, it is still about gambling and I was a Facebook poker addict so I enjoyed most of it.
Grading:
Story 5/10, Art 8/10, Sound 7/10, Character 7/10, Enjoyment 6/10, Overall 6/10
I disliked it but I recommend this anime to anyone who has not seen it yet.

How far are you willing to go to save your friend who you just met the day before? I don't know and it doesn't matter. What matters is that do you enjoy masturbating?
Before I start the actual review, I want to say that this show is unsuitable for these types of people:
- People with basic moral values
- People who does not like fan service
- People who want a good story
- People who want good character developments
- People who does not like excessive violence
- People who are sick of cliches
Now that all the haters are gone... ......... I guess there is not many of you
...
left... Now it is time for my review!
Enjoyment, the only thing that matters in this review: 6/10
*Gets punched in the face, bra breaks.
"H2O!!! CO2!! O3!!!!"
With golden moments as the ones above, it makes up for the terrible story and poor OP and ED. As a big fan of Women's combat sports + Senran Kagura, this show was "enjoyable". Thanks to the depth of "plot".
What hurts my enjoyment of the series is that the fight scene last too short, and the 3rd to 5th fight is rather weak in comparison to funny and "enjoyable" 2nd one. Outside the fight scenes, the story is too slow paced.
The last episode... ... It is at at least thrilling!
Recommended for fans of: School Days, Elfen Lied, Sexualized women.

A movie made by a studio no one really heard of, avg. score of 7.04. I really didn't have much expectation coming into this movie. Was I ever so surprised, I had the most thrilling 90 minutes of my life.
Story: 10/10
Story covers over things everyone is familiar with, bullying and social hierarchy. These themes are executed very well, while also very trilling to watch. Some people might think it is too brutal and unrealistic. Different culture and life experiences we have will makes us look at this film differently. The film felt real for me, but might not for people who had happy childhood.
...
My friends in China were spanked a lot, they did things to me just like what bullies did to them (People who watched the movie will know what I am talking about, yes it is to my penis). To be honest, some scenes were a bit extreme. But how extreme it was really sent a good message to us. The movie focuses a lot on hierarchy system. And how breaking it is impossible. I think go from bottom to top is definitely possible but it takes a LOT of work, and most people aren't capable of that. The story took me through a roller coaster of feelings. I hope it will take you as well!
Art: 7/10
The characters looks ugly... Which is a good thing here because they aren't suppose to look good in a movie like this, in another word the art style fits the theme very well. Except how awkward they looked when some character were walking or running. But it is normal because of their low budget. They did a fantastic job with those little budget they had.
Sound: 9/10
Sound isn't the big case here. Animation matches the voice, the OSTs is fit the situations very well. Thumbs up!
Character: 10/10
Characters development is outstanding. I think some people might think that the characters are absolute nuts. When they have so much stress, pain, miserable childhood, plus physical abuses from many people, it is not surprising that they became the way they are. And I think everyone in the world are capable of doing things they did, it is in our human nature. I have to mention it again, I felt closer to the character because I had similar experiences and thoughts when I was in China. And not everyone will feel that way!
Enjoyment: 10/10
It is very enjoyable! Hooked me in right start from the beginning of the film. The constant plot twists made me sit through entire movie barely blinked my eye. Every new character and plot twists were where they needed to be. Even when I finished watching the film, I still couldn't stop thinking about how good the film was!
Overall, I give 9.4/10. I really admire their courage of making a such controversial movie, that is the spirit of a studio without much to lose! I hope more people can give this movie a chance because it is an unique film! Spread the word if you likes this film and have a wonderful day!
