Nichijou is a surreal spin on the slice of life genre that focuses on slapstick comedy, playing off the weird and wacky occurrences as "everyday life" (as the title implies). Do not think of the show as having a coherent timeline, and more like a series of sketches set in a singular universe. Azumanga Daioh is a more grounded slice of life with a cohesive timeline of events, from freshman year to senior year, playing out an entire high school experience between a cast of friends. It's simple, calm, and nostalgic, and the characters and their differing personalities play off eachother really well.
