What's the one defining feature both of these anime have? Well, you guessed it. It's about slaying goblins! Not only do these series tell us how fearsome these vile creatures truly are, they also show the dire consequences whenever they aren't kept in check. Both anime also use goblins as a unique way to tell a story about overcoming hardship.

The main similarity is the cat-and-mouse game between the two main characters. Both shows are also very psychological and deal with underlying philosophical themes. If you're looking for a fantastic thriller, both of these anime will definitely scratch that itch.

Very similar aesthetic, atmosphere and art style. Both anime have chibi-like characters exploring the unknown in a mysterious world in an attempt to unravel their darkest secrets. Girls' Last Tour tends to get very bleak and is more focused on slice of life elements, whereas Made in Abyss is mostly an adventure-survival type anime.

Psycho-Pass

At first glance, Shinsekai Yori and Psycho Pass don't seem very similar. However, upon further inspection it becomes evident that both anime are set in a dystopian future. Both female leads have a strong sense of justice and through various horrifying experiences they learn shocking truths about their seemingly perfect world. The eerie atmosphere, heavy dialogue and brilliant antagonists make the entire experience even better.

The male protagonists in both Steins;Gate and Re:Zero have a similar goal. I won't say which goal because spoilers. They try to accomplish this goal through some sort of time travel. Steins;Gate elaborates a lot on the concepts of time, whereas in Re:Zero a more mysterious kind of power is involved to make time travel possible.

If gambling is your thing, then look no further. Both are insane, but in completely different ways. Kakegurui goes for a lighthearted, comedic approach whereas Kaiji is far more serious and thrilling. In my opinion, Kaiji encapsulates the essence of gambling infinitely better, because it knows how to build tension unlike Kakegurui. Despite that, Kakegurui is still worth watching solely for the amount of entertainment it provides.

Vinland Saga

In essence, Berserk (1997) is very similar to Vinland Saga. Both are historical war dramas and the stories have comparable progression. The main characters - Guts and Thorfinn, respectively - are fueled by a desire for revenge, though this theme manifests a lot earlier in Vinland Saga. Gore, mature dialogues, dark twists and a heavy atmosphere are central to both anime. The most noticeable difference is the setting. Berserk (1997) has a medieval environment, whereas Vinland Saga takes place in the Viking era.

When I started watching The Ancient Magus Bride, I couldn't help but feel reminded of Violet Evergarden. Both anime have slow-paced episodic storytelling and are at its core character studies of Chise and Violet, respectively. Both of the female leads have a broken past and try to discover their true identities by building emotional connections with the people around them. The Ancient Magus Bride takes place in a fantasy world, whereas Violet Evergarden has a historical setting in western Europe. If you are looking for a touching slice of life, these anime are absolutely worth the watch.

Both of these anime follow the lives of a male and female protagonist, with a troubled past. The protagonists get to know each other quickly, but at the start they are quite distant, cold and aloof towards each other. The male protagonists, Hachiman and Sakuta respectively, have a cynical outlook on life. Due to traumatic events, they’ve become socially isolated and as a result, they have a tough time opening up to other people. Although the causes for isolation are different, both characters share very similar personality traits, which will become more apparent if you decide to watch the shows. The female protagonists, Yukino and Mai, are similar as well. Both of these girls haven’t had an exciting childhood due to very high family expectations, leaving them with a distorted sense of identity and feelings of loneliness. Slowly but surely, the male and female protagonists help each other overcome their boundaries and personal issues. The growth and development in these characters is wholesome to watch. Overall, if you’re looking for a good romance / slice-of-life anime with natural character development and a mixture of seriousness and comedy, these might be the shows for you. I promise both of these anime are worth watching.
