I'll go ahead and get the inevitable comparison out of the way. Record of Lodoss War is The Lord of the Rings of anime. Maybe not as highly regarded as Tolkiens fantasy trilogy but still a spectacular addition to the genre.
One of the very first OVAs I was introduced to back in the late 90s ROLW was everything I'd ever wanted out of american animation but never recieved. A dark and serious fantasy adventure that touched on all the familar qualites that the genre is known for. Knights, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, Wizards, and epic bloody battles. This was a show strictly made for Fantasy fans.

If you had any doubt let me go ahead and clear it up for you real quick. Yes, Berserk lives up to its reputation. Never have I been so engaged in a show before. From the opening scene of the first episode I knew I was in for something special. Every single aspect of this show delivers. Story, character, action, music, suspense. Simply put, Berserk is some of the best story telling I have ever seen in any medium.
I will say no more. It's up to you if you want to experience a true gem of anime perfection or if you choose to keep ignoring ...

The first half of Claymore was fantastic. But as the series went on it became more and more action oriented. Not that there's anything wrong with that but after a while the fights became repetitive and lacked any real intensity. As the show progress's we are introduced to more and more Claymores and other characters but I only found Clare and Teresa to be interesting. We also never really learn anything about the Organization thats behind the scenes who control the Claymores. I thought that would be an interseting aspect for the show to explore but it never panned out.
