Is the influence on anime significant? Death Note or Blade of Oni? I tried to write on the topic of “Death Note” but it was already locked, so I will comment on your profile page.
I think Demon Slayer was more influential.
However, the coronavirus epidemic and the fact that Euphoria Table was the animation production company were the main reasons why it became popular. If the coronavirus epidemic and the animation production company were different companies, it would not have been so popular, or the influence of the anime would not have been so strong. I think so.
Incidentally, the manga series Death Note had a high reputation even before the anime was made, but Demon Slayer's reputation finally rose after the anime was broadcast and the coronavirus epidemic began.
You said: Even though I have a lot of love for kpop there's also a lot about it I don't love.
Yeah same here. I can the say the same for anime/manga too.
Also, I got something you can add to your MAL stat, did you ever had or played a Sega Master System? If you did, did you ever played Zillion and it's sequel. Did you ever played Cyborg Hunter? Because if you played any of the 3 games I mentioned, then you might or might not have known those games were originally anime tie-in video game!!! Yep, the 2 Zillion games on Sega Master System were tie-in and based on the anime TV series. Cyborg Hunter was based on the anime TV series, Sonic Soldier Borgman.
I have 2 video documentaries courtesy of GTV Japan that talked about Zillion and Borgman respectively (also turn on CC for closed captioning/SDH subtitles):
If you want to watched Borgman (with English subtitles), it's on Youtube (I'll add the link to the playlist):
Just a little word of warning: The first 23 episodes are subtitled correctly and done like a professional. But episode 24 and after are done by another fansubbers, and their subtitling are utter crap (as in misspelling, renaming characters in the subtitles, and all that weird shit). So I recommend just watching the first 23 episodes because of the subtitling done correctly and like a professional.
You said: I just turned 46 (born in 78) so technically I'm not a boomer I'm Gen X.
Then you might want to correct that statement on the forum because that would be misleading to most people if they think you were born in the mid 60's when you were born in 1978. Also here's the definition of Gen X according to Wikipedia:
Wikipedia said: Researchers and popular media often use the mid-1960s as its starting birth years and the late 1970s as its ending birth years, with the generation being generally defined as people born from 1965 to 1980.
So we got everything straight out.
Never been to an actual concert but came close to going to Odd Eye Circle and IVE when they were in Texas fairly recently but chickened out.
I wanted to go to a K-pop concert ever since moving to Texas, but the ticket are too damn expensive for me. Blackpink was in Houston I think a year (or 2 years ago), but tickets were too expensive for me. It's been a big issue for me and other K-pop fans.
That's bad ass that you've actually been to Korea and to M Countdown and even saw a pre worldwide famous BTS and those other groups. That had to be an amazing experience.
Oh yeah, but seeing SNSD-TTS was a big experience for me because both Tiffany and Seohyun touched my hand at the end of the show!!! Not making this up. To show you I'm not making this up, here's a video performance of WINNER at M! Countdown:
You see the guy in the white hat and smiling like he's having a great time? Yep, that's me in the video!!! Can't believe that video is still there.
you said: My all time favorite is f(x). I also like Kara, Wonder Girls, T-ara, AOA, Crayon Pop, Odd Eye Circle, IVE. Mostly 2nd gen girl groups.
You have good taste!!! Did you ever listened to 1st gen group like Seo Taiji & The Boys, H.O.T, Shinhwa, S.E.S, etc.... The reason I asked is because you wrote this:
Iron_Leopard said: Yes I'm a boomer who's frustrated with how you kids are keeping the industry alive
So that means you were born between 1946-1964, so I assume you had some sort of exposure to the earlier K-pop assuming you got chance to listen to them when you became a K-pop fan. I mean I assume that an older K-pop fan like you would probably be curious about the 1st gen K-pop group (early 90's-early 2000's).
Have you ever been to a K-pop concert? Because I've been to 2 of them (I saw B.A.P, and KARD). Also, I took a trip to South Korea in 2014, and I went to a M! Countdown and saw BTS (before they became household name in the US and worldwide), WINNER, SPICA, Teen Top, and SNSD-TTS on stage!!!
you said: And like my profile says I consider myself a casual and tend to watch anime that I'm more interested in instead of what's considered "must see". Also I'm not too big on mecha or space anime. But I'll give anything a try.
For someone who is a casual anime fan that watches the 80's and 90's, I'm kind of surprised that you wouldn't watch the mainstream 80's and 90's anime since those are the one that would make sense to a "casual" fan. But anyway, if you want to add these to your list to watch (and also to rack up your stat on MAL), I would recommend these:
If you want to improve your credibility and your status as a 80's anime fan, start with these 3 series. And I want to address this...
you said: But right now I'm more interested in hidden gems and obscurity.
So you want to look for some obscure and hidden gem anime, heh. Well, I know where you can find one. Are you familiar with Kineko Video? This particular YT channel has been picking up, restoring, and also uploading obscure anime titles whether it's a full-length film, and one-shot OVAs on there. Most of these titles that Kineko already uploaded are from the 80's and early 90's. Best of all, they're all subtitled (the fansubber did a good job translating and subtitling them) so you can watch them with no problem. I've watched some of them, and I think you might like them too. I'll put the video on here, and I'll link you their MAL entry so you can well add it to your database and stats, and increase your reputation on MAL.
Henteko na Volunteer/Weird Volunteer (1993, one-shot OVA. Even though this is a 90's anime, the artwork and animation makes the anime feels like a 70's anime. But I like this one-shot OVA because it teaches people how to be good and respect elders):
There's no subtitle for the 1980 pilot unfortunately. The 1984 one will feel like something Hayao Miyazaki write and direct because that one was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo (who would later worked at Studio Ghibli and did animation work for the studio, he would later direct 1995's Whisper of the Heart for Ghibli), and the fact that both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takaharta was involved in Little Nemo's pre-production has led to that 1984 pilot being nicknamed or called Ghibli's/Miyazaki's Little Nemo.
I hope whatever I give you is good enough for you to watch and add to your MAL profile. Hope you enjoy them!!!
For someone who watches 80's and 90's anime, you seem to have not have watched other well-known anime from that decade, I mean I looked at your list and you don't seem to have watch:
Ranma 1/2 (that anime is so well-known from that era, how have you not watched that) Kimagure Orange Road (this anime has already been available on streaming in the US, how are you not watching this anime) Robot Carnival (Yeah, I find that disturbing that a person who love watching 80's/90's anime somehow has not gotten chance to watch this anime) Armored Trooper VOTOMs (uh, Sunrise other real robot mecha anime. Seriously, how have you not got chance to watch this anime if you're a 80's anime fan?) Space Adventure Cobra (I looked at your list and it looks like you never watch that anime series nor the film before that)
I'm also surprised that I don't see any Gundam series on your list. I don't see Fist of the North Star, nor Macross on your list. Now I'm not attacking you or anything, but for someone who likes anime from the 80's and 90's, you seem to have not watched the one I mentioned above. Wouldn't a fan like you may have access/borrow or buy the anime to watch them so to keep up your status as a 80's/90's anime fan?
I missed your thread before it got locked but patrician taste, especially Noir and Dirty Pair are two of my favorites. Even though you don't watch much from after 2000 I'd still recommend checking out Madlax and El Cazador de la Bruja, the other two "girls with guns" shows that came after Noir. I'm rewatching all three now for Madlax's 20th anniversary.

Maybe not as much as you but the vast majority.
I see you like old sci-fi stuff as well.

Also, may I recommend adding these to your list:
Orguss (1984, 35 episodes. it's on blu-ray, only the first 17 episodes have dubbed in English, best to watch this anime subtitled)
Arion (1986, full length movie. This one is also available on blu-ray too):
I want you to include these on your list. By having these 2, that would increase your reputation and status as a 80's anime fan.
And like my profile says I consider myself a casual and tend to watch anime that I'm more interested in instead of what's considered "must see". Also I'm not too big on mecha or space anime. But I'll give anything a try.

Blue Comet SPT Layzner (From 1985, this has came out on blu-ray in the US courtesy of Discotek):
Aura Battler Dunbine (From 1983, it's available on blu-ray):
Space Runway Ideon (From 1981, the blu-ray was available on the US, I think it's out of print):
If you want to improve your credibility and your status as a 80's anime fan, start with these 3 series. And I want to address this...

Tobiuo no Boy wa Byouki desu/The Little Flying Fish get sick (1982, short film. Warning: the ending gets very sad, watch with discretion and tissues too):
Sea Cat (1988, short movie. This is another obscure late 80's anime I found and watched on the YT channel):
Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned (1980, feature length film. Yes this is the infamous anime adaptation of Marvel Comic's Tomb of Dracula, and guess what, this is the Japanese-language English subtitled version and not the inferior dubbed version):
Wagahai wa Inu de Aru: Don Matsugorou no Seikatsu/I Am A Dog: The Life of Don Matsugoro (1983, One shot TV special. This anime is the one where the talking dog is voiced none other then Lupin the 3rd, Yasuo Yamada):
Super Mario Bros: The great mission to save Princess Peach (1986, full length film. Yes, this is the one that it got a 4K restoration and got a lot of hype on the internet 2 years ago and is finally available to international audiences, and fully subtitled given that no previous English version was made):
Ninja Gaiden/Ninja Ryuukenden (1991, one-shot OVA. Yes, this is the anime adaptation of Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden game. Fully subtitled):
Aitsu to Lullaby: Suiyobi no Cinderella (1987, one shot film):
Kentauros no Densetsu/The Legend of Kentauros (1987, one shot full length OVA):
High School Jingi (1992, one-shot OVA):

Oh, and beside these titles courtesy of Kineko Video, I want to give you this. I assumed you watch Little Nemo, right? You do know it's been re-classified as an anime many years later. Before the anime movie (aka the final product) was made, there were 3 different pilot made for Little Nemo prior to the film. The first one came out in 1980, the second one in 1984, and the 3rd one in 1987. The 3 pilots have been compiled and uploaded on YT:
There's no subtitle for the 1980 pilot unfortunately. The 1984 one will feel like something Hayao Miyazaki write and direct because that one was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo (who would later worked at Studio Ghibli and did animation work for the studio, he would later direct 1995's Whisper of the Heart for Ghibli), and the fact that both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takaharta was involved in Little Nemo's pre-production has led to that 1984 pilot being nicknamed or called Ghibli's/Miyazaki's Little Nemo.
