Oh boy, how the elitist sing about this show. No other anime will compare, they say, it's the greatest of all time, they say. I'm here to tell the truth about Galactic Heroes and what made the show good and bad.
Characters 10: One of the best parts of the show and what made me continue watching each episode are the characters. There are a whole shit ton of characters and it can be hard to remember a few of the side pieces if they are off screen for awhile. The characters are well written and it is enjoyable to see each of their

journeys unfold. My favorite characters are Reinhard, Yang, Siegfried, Attenborough, Reuenthal, and Mittermeyer. These characters are a joy to watch and have many compelling moments throughout the show. There are way more people in the show that are good too but I'll let you judge.
Story/Lore 8.5: The story of Galactic Heroes is where I can really deduct points from, with good reason. Galactic conquest is the game and the Free Planets Alliance is not having any of that. Reinhard (Galactic Empire) and Yang (FPA) are the main characters of each faction and have a duel of the fates in space for most of the 110 episodes. Meanwhile, we got terrorist working in the dark in order to fuck with everyone they can. A lot of people praise the action and strategical warfare in the show but I can tell you right now, they are fucking lying to you. The strategies and tactics they use in space warfare are generally boring and mostly consist of each fleet encircling another fleet, backing away from a fleet when they get too close, trying to bate a fleet to come into a certain area, or using Thor's Hammer. The FPA just boards ships sometimes and are able to win that way, while the empire never does this even though it works every time for the FPA. If Yang or Reinhard or not commanding the fleets it devolves into the empire winning each time against the incompetent FPA. If Yang is commanding a fleet and Reinhard is not involved the empire always loses because they are useless without Reinhard. When both are commanding it is always a draw. Experienced admirals make boneheaded mistakes all the time and Reinhard always has to look disappointed when he meets his admirals because one of those bitches fucked up. Yang is generally cool about fuck ups but the old heads in the FPA are not fans of his cool attitude and excellent fighting skills so they get mad at him. Some character deaths were not that satisfying, even though they can be seen as justified or more realistic deaths than standard anime deaths. There is so much more to say but the main point is that the story is not always entertaining or interesting. The lore of the world is interesting and even plausible in a distant future but the only people in the world of Galactic Heroes are humans and Reinhard, which makes me a little sad because I would have loved to see some alien life.
Dialogue 9.5: The 2nd best part of the show and what kept me going when nothing was happening for 10 episodes straight. Interesting conversations and powerful speeches happen all the time during the show and all I can say is it is a joy to watch and listen to.
Sound 8: Great soundtrack. I take some points off here because the soundtrack is not that diverse with memorable music and it does not use unique pieces for the show. The show uses classical music as the soundtrack and it works out because classical music fits this space opera of a show. I don't think they fill some scenes with enough music and even though great classical pieces are used, I don't think they were that memorable throughout the show. I believed the scenes outweighed the music at almost every turn, which is a good sign of a great story.
Art/Animation 8: The weakest part of the show in today's time is the old animation and some of the boring character designs. Some characters start to blend together are not that unique as you start meeting more people. Attenborough and Yang damn near lookalike besides their hair. Both factions outfits are not that appealing on the eyes. Reinhard is a glorious angel. Some of the ships have a cool design but most of them are bland (don't be fooled by that spaceship chart, you barely see most of them). The animation is okay. It's an old show so you can't expect much. The gore is well done and when someone gets fucked up it usually looks good. The space battles are not that enjoyable to watch and the laser guns kind of look like shit too.
Overall 8.5: Is it the greatest anime of all time?? A Jedi does not deal in absolutes. No, but it is one of the best shows structurally I've seen and I'm including live action shows and anime into that. It is definitely worth the watch if you love rich worlds and deep dialogue that has far reaching impact later episodes on. This show is not really an anime in many respects but it was put into this medium for some reason and succeeded. If this was made into a live action or newer anime now, I think it could be amazing. It is a more adult show so I don't recommend it to anyone who has little patients or younger viewers. The middle of the show (ep 25-85) is amazing for anyone who loves a good drama and receives a 10/10 for me.
