Mahou Shoujo? Naria☆Girls

Koutarou Ishidate's ad-libbed nonsense comedies are decidedly not for everyone, but if you find yourself laughing out loud at the absurd conversations, meta jokes on top of meta jokes and deliberately terrible animation of Naria Girls, I cannot recommend gdgd Fairies enough. The grandmother of it's own genre, gdgd Fairies is the first of Ishidate's improv shows and in many ways still the best, with a variety-like setup that makes the adsurd segments come naturally, a set of great VAs playing off of each other and an abundance of spectacularly horrible CG segments utilized to great effect.

Dennou Coil

Imagine Digimon Tamers' first arc with better animation and without the mandated toy tie-ins, and you'll basically have Dennou Coil. A group of children have secret adventures in a world where computer-generated artificial creatures interface with reality, and clash with the adults who want to regulate and control that world. While Dennou Coil lacks Tamers' monster battles and apocalyptic themes, both shows tackle psychological issues with the same respect for their child protagonists. In Dennou Coil as in Tamers, children are explored as full human beings, and neither show pulls it's punches when it comes to showing children going through bad things. The shows also share a stong sense of place and community.
