In 2008, I wrote this 'about me' section:
"I enjoy a wide variety of anime titles - that is, if said anime titles are either magical girl or mindscrew.
The day someone makes a magical girl mindscrew anime, I can die happily."
...Madoka Magica was made for me (and is my favorite anime).

It's really either because Sailor Moon is pretty much the magical girl anime every single magical girl show has since then adopted that it's not aged well, or it really is that particular story (which apparently plays out like a fairy tale?) that hasn't aged well. I dunno, something about it rubbed me the wrong way anyway. But I have noticed watching Crystal gave me a Disney princess vibe in some areas--which isn't bad, I really and truly like many of the Disney princess movies, but I kinda expected something different in that regard. I dunno, with all the praise and (nostalgic) gushing I've heard about the series over the years, I guess I was expecting something grandiose, something unique that makes Sailor Moon stand out and why it's become so beloved. Although I was also expecting that maybe the fans were being too harsh on Crystal because reboots rarely go well with anyone (and I've been guilty of such things myself), but it turned out all the complaints (or at least most of them--ones I could understand, anyway?) were justified.
I suppose I'll see when I do get around to the original series. Some of the good things I hear about it are that the fillers are unusually entertaining despite them generally being the bane of everyone's existence. And given this is Toei we're talking about (the studio that I swear has issues with pacing alongside its numerous animation goofs), I do find that interesting.
'Course, I can't say the same for Dragon Ball Super in that regard, and I feel the complaints for Digimon Tri are nitpicky and/or are coming from those who aren't getting what's going on, but Crystal had a lot of red flags pretty much from the start, which I believe stems back from when the series was delayed to 2014 without a single word as to why the big gap between its original announcement and its first airing.
