If you're looking for a gritty and realistic look into the life of a high school delinquent in Japan then you are in the wrong place. In fact, our two main characters aren't even true delinquents. However, that doesn't stop them from gaining the reputation as the most badass duo to walk the earth as they trample over their competition with unwavering confidence, brute strength, cunning and a helluva lot help from luck and the blunders of Katsutoshi Imai. Despite its rather simple nature, Kyou kara Ore wa is an exceptional anime.
Kyou kara Ore wa is about two high schoolers who, upon moving to a
...
new school decide to reinvent themselves as delinquents. To make matters more interesting, they both figure out that the other is faking from the start and stumble their way into a confrontation with their high school's delinquent gang. This is only the first of many encounters the two face as their reputation and "bad boy" personas spiral out of control. The show is primarily an episodic format, but there are often little bits of subplot that carry across the episodes. Its episodes are also longer than traditional anime episodes, likely due to it being an OVA. Although far from realistic, the story is captivating, thrilling and filled with humor. The format and pacing are also extremely well done. There are enough episodic plot points in each episode to keep things fresh and also enough overarching plot to keep you coming back episode after episode. The show contains mini story arcs where the main duo face of with new opponents and every one of these arcs is thoroughly entertaining.
This show was made in the 90's where animation technology wasn't as developed and shows were animated essentially by hand. This can result in some pretty ugly looking shows if down poorly but when a studio goes all out, the result is animation that I personally far prefer to the comparably lifeless anime being produced in mass today. Considering this shows ten episodes were slowly released over a period of 5 years, uuuhh ya I think we can say they took the time to do it right. Although not flawless the animation in this show is top notch. There are choppy bits here and there but overall the studio did a fantastic job.
The sound didn't really leave much of an impact on me. I hardly noticed the score the voice acting was pretty yelly most of the time, but decent overall and the sound effects seemed pretty mediocre. In particular the sounds of the characters punches were quite cartoony, but for me personally, it only added to the character of the show.
I love the characters in this show. In the 90's dere tropes weren't really a thing yet. I'm not saying we've got some of the most original characters ever but they do seem a lot less tired out then say, the extreme tsundere with pink twin tales. The ways in which the different personalities and quirks of the various characters slam into each other is extremely well done and adds a lot to the narrative and subplot. I could go on about the specific characters but I think it'd just be better for you to go and experience them for yourself.
It's hard not to enjoy such a well-crafted show. It has action, drama and a sprinkle of romance. I'd be tempted to rate it higher, but like I said earlier it a fairly basic show. It does a great job in every category but at the same time, I feel it falls a bit short of what could be called a "masterpiece" due to its lack of ambition. Despite the fact, that it didn't survive long enough to truly develop, and give us more time with the characters, Kyou kara Ore wa is an incredible anime that deserves more attention then it gets.

The problem with shows like this one is they inspire such blind devotion that people overlook its glaring flaws. I'll admit right now that I love this show, and although I'm enjoying this season, there are quite a few things that bother me.
The plot this season is definitely uping the stakes compared to previous seasons. It is quite enthralling but is also frustratingly flawed. There are of course all of the instances of the main character being unnaturally successful at everything he does, but like whatever. What bothers me is all the moments where I'm just awestruck as things that shouldn't and can't happen in
...
a realistic world shape the events of the story. The main conflict in this season stems from such an occurrence.
The budget for this show has unfortunately tanked hard. The animation is just SOOOOO unbelievably lazy. Everything is flash, they overuse all the lazy anime tactics: switching to a goofy, super cartoony animation in order to make animating easier, rarely showing legs while people walk, frequently focusing on still images, animating almost nothing on the character but their mouth. They've even removed nearly all of the elaborate visual foodgasm metaphors. The sound is just normal anime sound, decent voice acting, basic anime music and sound effect. Is whatever.
You know the characters by now, or at least the main ones. There has been a good number of them up until this point. That's why they decided to add like 20 new characters, whose names you'll never learn, as regulars on the roster. I hate when shows do this. Ya, it keeps things interesting, but like in the same way that starting a new anime and watching the first 4ish episodes before doing the same thing again, keeps things interesting. I like many of the characters they introduced up until this point which is unfortunate because now there are so many characters that I don't get to see the few I like. Additionally all, and I mean ALL of the characters in this show are SUPER tropes, so get ready for that.
Luckily this show is super enjoyable, otherwise, there'd be no redeeming it. The fact that they managed to make such a crappy, lazy season like this and still make it enjoyable is astonishing. It is however not nearly as good as the hype would suggest.

So the tldr on this show is it's kinda interesting but definitely not "good." This show isn't gonna blow you away with its brilliant art or fascinating and unique characters, nor is it's plot gonna have any twists that are outside of what you come to expect from shows like this one. That being said it does manage to hold my attention pretty well and if you're not looking for something spectacular and just want something interesting to watch this show could be what you are looking for.
Story-
It's a high school for the super elite, or so they say. In reality, I think it'd be
...
more accurate to say that it is a high school that produces the super elite. Unfortunately, this is one of those shows where the people making it weren't aware of their status as a fairly basic anime, and as a result, this show suffers from that pretension that often haunts anime. They try to be all philosophical at times but it doesn't really work. Not gonna spoil anything but the plot is definitely set up in a pretty interesting manner by the end of the first episode.
Art/Sound-
Gonna be quick as there generally isn't much to say about these in mainstream commercial anime. Everything is, for the most part, well polished yet supremely regular. I will say that the music for me was a big plus. Manages to add to the tone quite nicely.
Characters-
They are all tropes. Yes, I know, pretty much every anime character created recently is a trope I'm just letting you know that this show is the same. If you make the mistake of thinking "wow that character is super interesting and unique" it's probably just because you have yet to encounter that type of character. The MC, in particular, is a hardcore trope. I'm gonna tell you his dere type which may be considered a spoiler so skip ahead if you don't wanna know...... Ready? He's a kuudere. Yup another one, and get this they totally try to sell him as some pathetic loner guy at the start before he starts forming his harem and releasing his hidden OP anime protagonist powers. If you've never seen this trope before I'm shocked you've made it to this site. Oh and the front runner for best girl (she may not be best girl but is first girl if ya know what I mean (as in she is the first harem member)) i'll give you one guess at her dere type. Yup, tsundere. If you got that wrong please leave.
Enjoyment-
Like I said it's entertaining. If you are a vet who enjoys their tropes then you at the very least will be satisfied by the execution of those roles in this anime.
I would summarize but I did that in the tdlr at the start so...

Just finished this show and decided to write a review for it cause I'm overflowing with opinions on it. This anime was all over the place for me. It consistently made me angry due to how bad it was but at the same time, it was really good.
Story
It was at the very least interesting. It was all over the place though. The plot felt like it wasn't planned out very well and was trying to move too fast. The premise of the show was very interesting and the world they created was also very cool. The main problem is I was constantly asking "why?" throughout
...
the whole show. There is almost never a clear reason for what is going on in the plot, and only during a few moments is it actually clear what the end goal of the actions taking place is. Even the MC doesn't know why the fuck he's doing stuff for like the majority of the show, but at least it had an actual ending so there's that.
Art/Sound
This was clearly a very big budget production so the art and sound were top notch. They weren't anything particularly unique, but they were never disappointing.
Characters
This was what killed me while watching this show. The characters were all over the place even more than the plot. It was like they were afraid of being accused of having "static characters" so they just made the most psychotic bi-polar characters ever. To give you an example the MC's development goes- crybaby, creepy/jealous, I fight for my friends, PTSD meltdown, abandon everyone/cry baby again, I'm gonna save everyone, I'm not gonna fight, I am gonna fight, I don't want to be king, I'm king, super tyranny mode, back to crybaby mode and finally god complex/savior mode. I swear the character in this show will give you wiplash, and they are always switching sides even more so than Code Geass. At the same time that I felt there motivations and development were stupid unrealistic and illogical, I couldn't help but also feel drawn into their stupid motivations and development.
Enjoyment
it varies. The fights were hype as shit and beautiful. There were many points that I found entertaining. The rest of the time, though, I hated everyone and everything that was happening.
If you can push through the horrible moments you may be able to enjoy the good ones. Watch at your own risk though cause I'm pretty sure this show gave me cancer.

Yo, I've pretty much exhausted my patience with the overly generous reviews for this show, so I'm going to resist the masses and give this show a real review.
This show is super basic. I don't have a problem with shows being basic, so long as they are good. Unfortunately, this show really isn't that good. Being basic AND not that good is a pretty deadly combo. The only thing positive I can really say about this show is that it's very professionally made and well polished.
As far as I can tell this show is attempting to be the new shonen super power of
...
animes. I'm therefore going to review it as such.
The big shonen anime generally have a slow and steady kinda plot. Bleach, Naruto, One Piece etc are pretty good examples of this. Often they follow an "arc" based format. The cast of characters remains mostly the same as they progress through these arcs and the characters and sometimes the overarching plot develops along the way. Boku no Hero Academia pacing seems to be set up in order to facilitate turning this into a very long anime. It very well may be setting up future plot points but as I watch it feels as if the shows going nowhere at all. It's almost as if the plot is getting side tracked. This is something that tends to happen in these types of anime but generally, these moments serve to develop the character or their powers/abilities. I can't see any noticeable signs of that in this show though and it simply feels like they are wasting time that could be spent on more relevant things.
I'm gonna keep the art/sound reviews short. This is a pretty big budget anime. As a result, the quality of the animation and sound is high quality. That Being said it's basic. There also doesn't seem to be any kind stylistic elements to the show. Twinstar Exorcists was a very similar show to this one, IMO, that at least had a very well-crafted style in its art and sound. Boku has a generic design for characters and settings while at the same time making them less interesting than other animes with a generic design. Hunter x Hunter had a pretty basic style, but the characters in that show had infinitely better design, not only in the way they were drawn but also in their personalities, ideology, motivations and even the little detail like the way they moved and carried themselves.
I kind of already started talking about the characters in the art/sound category. In the same way that the art and "style" of this show is lacking the characters are as well. They are all characters we've seen before but what's sad is that they simply aren't better than those other characters. I have no problem with an "I want to be a hero of justice" character but I do have a problem with one that is to entirely uninteresting. His entire motivation comes from when he saw a superhero as a kid and thought he looked cool. I'm nearly certain every person in this fictional universe had that same experience at some point. He's certainly determined but possessing determination is not enough to create a character with depth. Early on he had the potential interesting quirk of being quick-less and still aspiring to be a superhero. Instead of having him struggle with that fact as he fights to achieve his goal he is instead given an OP quirk and the only notable thing about his character is erased.
The main saving grace of this show is that despite its mediocrity, it manages to be fairly entertaining. Honestly, I think everyone's just been in the mood for a new high budget shonen super series to dive into. There is some fairly decent action as well as a bit of that classic shounen combination of hype and feels. It keeps you just barely entertained enough to come back next week for another episode.
Yes, this review was harsh, but someone needs to balance out this shows mad hype train. This show really isn't anything special and it's certainly not a masterpiece. The shonen mega series of the past easily beat it. If this site had been this popular during the golden days of bleach and naruto then those two shows would no doubt have a much higher rating. Would those reviews be accurate? Hell no. Wait for your hype to die down, watch the show objectively, compare it to other things you've seen and you will no doubt realize that this show does not deserve the level of praise it receives.

FLCL is not a standard anime. It is a 6 episode OVA. It is hella artsy, fast paced and hyperactive and NOT story focused.
For the most part, the main critic that I've seen for this anime is that it has a terrible plot, or no plot at all according to some people. This show isn't plot focused and therefore shouldn't be evaluated so heavily on its story. I've neglected to rate the story at all as recognition of this fact (although personally, I'd like to praise the vaguely fabricated plot in this anime as I very much enjoyed it).
Giving FLCL a poor review for
...
its plot is like giving dragon ball a poor review because it had weak/no romantic elements in it. If you want story this is NOT the show for you. Evaluate a show on what it is not what you want it to be.
Alright rant over
If you are an "aesthetic" junkie this is gonna be a perfect show for you. If you like deeply embedded metaphors (that are often so esoteric you will fail to recognize them) you'll like this show. If you like the drawing style of kill la kill and Gurren Lagann, aggressive humor, and characters, references to other stuff, quality English dubs and girls with bass guitars you should seriously consider watching this show.
The reason so many people rate FLCL as a "masterpiece" is that, when it comes to the things this show was attempting to do well, it absolutely succeeded.
The animation is masterfully done. In contrast with shows like cowboy be bop, where the animation very accurately captures real motion, FLCL makes no attempt at drawing things in a realistic way. On the contrary, they intentionally exaggerate movement and proportions in a way that merges well with the style.
The sound is also masterfully done. The music in this anime is some of my all time favorite. Sound effects and overall mix quality are very professional and in addition, this show can actually be watched dubbed. One of the main problems with English dubs, and why many hardcore anime fans give up on dubs all together, is that they fail to properly capture the characters and the emotions of the scenes. In addition, they tend to just feel goofy and unprofessional. While at first, I couldn't stand the English voices in FLCL, as I watched further I was surprised by how well the characters were captured. The English dub is very successful across the board.
I saw some major hate on the characters in this show, but honestly, the hate was more due to bias than the actual portrayal of the characters. Many anime fans (myself included) are infatuated by the "epic hero" style characters. What I mean by this is that like epic heroes in older literature, many characters in anime are portrayed as having few to no flaws. The characters morals or disposition are very frequently elevated above what is normal for a human being. In contrast, the characters in FLCL are more flawed. The show also lacks the "good vs evil" struggle found in many anime as well as other forms of media. Instead, there is conflict within the characters themselves. Many of the characters show characteristics of good and evil. If you NEED that epic hero style, overly perfect heroes then I can see where you may not like the characters in this anime. That being said, objectively, the characters are all quite well done and personally, I loved every one of them.
Enjoyment of this is gonna be hit or miss. There is just enough of a plot to give the viewer som basic comfort in following the events of the series but once again it's not the focus. If you have the ability to enjoy a show based on it's beautifully crafted atmosphere, an interesting and random sequencing of events, deep but flawed characters and a few very entertaining and satisfying action scenes then you will more than likely thoroughly enjoy FLCL. If this isn't you and you need complex and interesting plot then you might want to skip this one.
I personally love both abstract and artsy anime like this as well as more traditional, plot heavy anime. When it comes to the abstract category FLCL is at the top of my list. It is without a doubt one of my all time favorites. Granted this is largely due to how closely it adheres to my personal taste in aesthetics, sound, art etc etc etc, so while my personal score for this anime is 10/10 my objective score is 8/10. Despite all the controversy at the end of the day it is impossible to deny the quality and beauty of this anime, and when reviewed for what it was intended to be it deserves at least an 8/10.

I saw this show getting a lot of hate and read the reviews and although they are all valid I feel they are missing what makes this show hidden OP.
The so called "golden age" of anime is over and what are we left with? This garbage moe SAO like basic af anime world where absolutely everything is a re-hashed trope. This rant sound farmilar? That's probably because it's true. Anime has been almost entirely sucked into the "moe" culture thing that's going on in parts of Japan right now. I'm gonna be honest I love/hate the moe. Modern anime can feel so one dimensional
...
but at the same time I adore SOOOO many of the tropes. Like lets be honest for a moment here if you really hated tsundere lolis as much as you claim to there is no way you'd still be watching anime, so where does this show fit in that dynamic?
Akame ga Kill DOES NOT escape from the cliches of the genre and I'm not gonna feed you some pretentious bullshit on how it transcends them or whatever. Akame ga kill plants itself firmly in the tropes and still kills it (IMO).
I'm now gonna explain why this show was such a success in my eyes. Honestly, the reason I like it is cause it scratches the anime itch quite well. I'm gonna just list a few of those things that drew me personally into the genre- Far fetched sci-fi/fantasy worlds not suited for other media, world creation and lore that is goofy but sucks you in, over the topness in characters, action, humor etc and perhaps the most important thing the hype. Akame ga Kill has all of these. The more seasoned of us were further enthralled in the genre by things like- the more gritty moments in anime, cultural elements, complex plots, stylistic aspects of the shows, yanderes (lol maybe not yanderes), other stuff I'm forgetting right now. Akame ga Kill has some of this including the yandere.
It's no masterpiece. No one is making that argument, but if you go into thinking "I'm willingly watching a modern anime coming from the moe infected industry" which you should be thinking cause this show makes no attempt to hide that, that's what it is and it is still immensely satisfying. The action is VERY entertaining, the mood swings from heavy to super light hearted in second (the heavy parts aren't meant to compete with REAL darkness in other anime but more to create a greater juxtaposition between the gritty and the light-hearted moments during the rapid switches), it makes some fairly bold plot choices for the type of anime it is, and the characters it creates are (mostly) quite endearing. Even though some of them are terrible and I should hate them *cough* ice lady, I actually am still secretly hoping things work out for these characters.
There is definitely more I could write here but I'm running outta steam *shrug*
final remarks- akame for best girl
jk the ice bitch is definitely best girl ;)
