Both are super artsy shaft productions. Very similar art style. Both are in a school setting where apart from the protagonist, nearly all characters are female. Both manage to have very strong moe vibes while not being completely basic.

Both have a shonen like a format and feel but with more mature content and dynamic plot points. Not necessarily groundbreaking animes, but are unique enough, have good action and a decent, well-paced plot. Also, they both involve mysterious weapons that are the source of the characters powers. This creates interesting dynamics throughout the show.

Both take place in a gritty fantasy world. Focus more on physical fighting as opposed to magic. They are both more of what you might expect a fantasy setting to be like as opposed to an anime or jRPG like fantasy world.

Similar format. The show is largely episodic but has a main story that develops over time. In addition, they both have top-notch animation, sound design, editing etc. Doesn't have the "feel" of most conventional, commercial anime.

Both heavily stylized according to the era they came from. Both have rather complex plots that come to a close by the final episode. Little to no subplots are present in either. Very similar pacing.

Shows are both seinen meaning they are intended for a slightly older audience (roughly 17-25 years if I'm not mistaken). In addition to the fact that they both have a darker and more gritty atmosphere, complete with heavy gore, they both have heavy moral dilemmas and intense psychological aspects.
