Two highly detailed anime's in which unassuming youngsters uncover they are actually part of a massive conspiracy which unfolds as the series progresses. These anime's are very similar in content, yet being that both are mystery, it's difficult to put forward why they are alike without incorporating spoilers, so once you give this pair a change, this recommendation will make a lot more sence.

Within both series, we see a smart, streetwise female on a journey who takes a clueless, strong male who lives in solitude out on 'her' adventure across the lands, searching for a number of specific items. The female leads are pretty sensible in comparrison to the female leads you see often in shounen's today, yet as serious as she is, she isn't immune to humiliation. The male lead isn't subject to buttmonkey and dispite his intellect being questionable, he does make you wonder at times. A partnership of brains and brawn - both being nessessary. Both are have a whole lot of conversation-worthy material.

These anime's feature obscure character's who's 'origin' isn't quite explinied in simplistic terms. We also have a fairly similar leading male - a pleasant enough, but quite and slighly moody teen boy with a relivant 'hair antena'. Neither of these anime incorporate characters that aren't too importiant. The art is highly similar - very comic strip looking character design; not highly detailed within shading and proportions, but appropriot for the overall, trippy setting. The scenery is very similar too - not too detailed, bright and misty aswell city setting.

Both are unconventional anime's that rely heavily on; subliminal messages, trippy scenery and a lack of information, ensuring that the viewer pays full attention (multi-task and you'll miss something). You'll also find that there's a lack of archtyping as the characters are quite unusual, stepping out of any indication of 'type' and maming a name for themselves. There's a number of examples of fandissservice present in both.

The similarities between these two shows come in the form of the tone... Both are dark and the amungst the more 'mature' shounen's avaliable: - we don't simply see a 'fountain of blood' to maintain a 'horror' element, there is actual graphic scenery - there we have crudeness present in both which doesn't rely on your typical cases of half naked ladies We don't have a single 'be all and end all' safe hero: - the 'good guys' aren't particullarly angelic - minors and new cast members establish themselves - 'bad guys' get their fair share of attention when not facing off against 'the hero's'

On top of both anime's consisting of 10 minutes of truely random and daft material, they share a number of key ellements... A young, normal person in a professional setting has no choice but to adjust to their new life - co-oporating with highly odd individuals whilst in the centre of obscure situation. Neither rely on what many of us are use to seeing in comedy anime - they don't rely on; bishounen's, the passive wimps, tsundere's, moe's and general harems situations - some of the plots are simple and realistic to some degree.
