"Itsuki: I'll explain it the best I can. We're currently stuck in a time loop that seems to have no end to it.
Kyon: Huh? Are what?
Itsuki: We're currently stuck in a time loop that seems to have no end to it.
Kyon: Uh...
Itsuki: We're currently stuck in a time loop that seems to have no end..."
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009) is an anime unlike any other. Given the fact that you are currently reading this I'm going to assume that you know about the controversial "Endless Eight" arc, in which practically the same episode is shown eight times in a row. Many people have criticized the
...
show for this without looking deeper. It is only after a deeper analysis of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009) can one truly appreciate the beauty that is the Endless Eight.
Story - 10
The story of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009) picks up where Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu left off. Kind of. Because the first season was told with episodes out of chronological order, the events of the second season actually take place within the events of the first season. If you are new to the Haruhi Suzumiya series, I recommend starting with the first season in the order in which they aired, then moving on to the second season. It is possible to watch the entire thing in chronological order, but this will throw off the originally intended pacing of the show. Anyways, back to the story itself. It starts off with classic Haruhi that we all love, but then the Endless Eight happens. I don't want to spoil anything, but in my honest opinion the Endless Eight arc is one of the best executed plot devices in modern anime. When watching, look not only for the subtle differences between episodes, but also for their meaning. This is one in which the writers are able to convey a message to the viewer only upon a closer look. Think back to your high school English classes and remember analyzing the works of Shakespeare. The same techniques used here shows that there is much more to Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009) than what is apparent on the surface, but what this something else is is up to the viewer to discover themselves.
Art - 10
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu always had very solid art, but in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009) is where you can truly see the genius of the artists that created this masterpiece. Despite the fact that each episode in the Endless Eight is nearly identical, notice that each time the characters are wearing different outfits. The animations are different, the backgrounds are different, the colors are different. Think about it. If you are the person in charge of paying for artists to animate eight very similar episodes, would you not just use the same animations multiple times? In Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009), they went the extra mile and animated everything eight separate times. This just goes to show the quality of the visuals in this work of art.
Sound - 7
The sound was nice. That's it really, just nice. There really wasn't anything too special about it, but the opening and ending songs were quite catchy. Nothing else was too memorable in terms of music. The voice overs were spot on, as to be expected since it was the same as the first season.
Character - 9
The characters in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu are some of the most memorable characters in all of anime. I would go into more detail here but its something you have to watch to understand, but just know that in this show there exists aliens, time travelers, espers, and goddesses. None of the characters really are how they at first seem.
Enjoyment - 10
The enjoyment factor for this one really seals the deal. Only Haruhi could show the same episode eight times and I was still laughing and enjoying the eighth one.
Overall - 10
This truly is an unforgettable anime. It does what most other anime nowadays doesn't do, and it goes deeper than just what appears on the surface. Truly a masterpiece in my eyes, though not for everyone. If you are unwilling to look into the deeper meaning of things, then keep away from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009) and just stick with the first season. However, if you are willing to dig deeper and conduct a literary analysis, I promise you, this will be on the best pieces of modern art you will have ever witnessed.
